The Oneida Indian Nation

Turning Stone Resort is an enterprise of the Oneida Indian Nation. The Oneida or Onyota a ka people are one of the founding members of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy, and have lived in the area now known as Central New York since time immemorial. The Oneidas' traditional homelands originally extended from the St. Lawrence River to the Susquehanna.

When the first settlers came to the Oneidas' lands, they were welcomed. Friendships grew between the two peoples, and when the Revolutionary War broke out, the Oneidas sided with the colonists against the British. The Oneidas fought with the colonists at several key battles of the American War for Independence.

In 1794, the U.S. Congress formally recognized the Oneidas' loyalty and courage with the Treaty of Canandaigua, signed by George Washington. Through this document, the fledgling United States affirmed the right of the Oneidas to be self-governing as a nation, and to oversee its lands and its affairs without interference of other governments.

The Oneida Nation continues to hold fast to its traditions and culture and today is enjoying a level of prosperity that allows it to provide housing, education, health and cultural services to its members, as well as stable employment and benefits for nearly 5,000 workers. In addition, through the Oneida Nation Foundation and special gifts, the Oneidas support neighboring communities, having donated more than $20 million in the last 15 years to area charities, schools and governments, including a $3 million endowment to the School of Law at Harvard University.

Because of their courage in centuries past and their vision to build and develop now, the future looks bright - not only for today's Oneidas but for the seventh generation yet to come.
