PGA TOUR player Chris DiMarco's annual golf tournament set a new record October 23rd when $729,000 was raised for children with cancer. In its six years more than $2.5 million has been donated to the American Cancer society to support projects like "Reach Out for Cancer Kids", college scholarships and a research endowment. The 2006 event, held at DiMarco's home course of Heathrow Country Club north of Orlando, Fla., featured 40 celebrities from the sports, media and entertainment world. They included World Golf Hall of Fame member Nancy Lopez, Major League Baseball Player/Manager Ray Knight, heavyweight boxer Gerry Cooney, Miami Dolphins receiver Nat Moore, NBA great Artis Gilmore, NHL Hall of Famer Phil Esposito, Cy Young Award-winner Frank Viola and ESPN Announcer Lee Corso. The Sunday evening pairings party also included a private concert by the band "Sister Hazel". This year the tournament was renamed in Chris' late mother Norma DiMarco's honor. She passed away July 4, 2006 from an unexpected heart attack. In her memory, Chris also donated $25,000 from the Ryder Cup to the American Heart Association. Chris said that he is "extremely proud" of the efforts of everyone, especially his father Rich who kept the committee on task to pull off the largest tournament in its six-year history. According to the American Cancer Society, the Norma DiMarco Tee Up For Life Tournament is the largest fundraiser of its kind in the nation.
