A stellar field of 156 players will take the stage in Highland Heights, Ohio, this week for the Nationwide Tour's second annual Legend Financial Group Classic Presented by Cynergies Solutions. Located just outside of Cleveland, the par-71 StoneWater Golf Club will again host the $500,000 event. The 7,045-yard design played to a stroke average of 71.984 a year ago and measured in as the ninth-toughest course of the season. Andrew Johnson stands to make history if he can hold onto his crown and become the first-ever Nationwide Tour player to successfully defend a title. Johnson earned his well-deserved first Tour title after an impressive 14-under finish at last year's inaugural event. Twelve winners from the 2006 season are in the field including last week's National Mining Association Pete Dye Classic champion, Jason Enloe, and two-time champ Tripp Isenhour, who's still chasing a three-win promotion to the PGA TOUR. Several players with ties to Ohio will be also be competing at StoneWater including Ohio State alums Chris Smith and Chris Wollman. The Buckeyes will be joined by Kent State grads Kevin Gessino-Kraft and David Morland IV as well as Cleveland native Jason Dufner, who celebrated a big win earlier this season at the LaSalle Bank Open. As the season heads into the homestretch, keep an eye on 2006's potential darkhorse Boo Weekley. Although he has yet to win this season, Weekley has logged six top-10 finishes -- including a $64,800 second-place playoff finish at last week's event. Weekley is currently ranked 11th on the money list and leads the Tour in three statistical categories: Scoring Average, Total Driving and Greens in Regulation. Another one to watch this week is 38-year-old Craig Bowden. After finishing second at the Cox Classic last month, Bowden came back strong two weeks later to beat Jess Daley in a one-hole playoff at the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic. That win, coupled with eight other top-25 finishes this season, helped Bowden edge Isenhour out of the No. 2 spot on the money list where he currently remains with $277,621 banked in 2006. Catch all of the action from this week’s Legend Financial Group Classic on the The Golf Channel, beginning Thursday, Aug. 31 at 1:30 pm ET. Next up, the Nationwide Tour heads to Sandy, Utah, for the $475,000 Utah EnergySolutions Championship. |
