Eduardo Romero made up five strokes on the final day, the largest come-from-behind win in the history of this event. Both Craig Stadler (2004) and Jack Nicklaus (1996) came from four shots back in winning the JELD-WEN Tradition. This event has now had a player come-from-behind to win five consecutive years.

Argentina’s Eduardo Romero became the Champions Tour’s 13th different winner in 2006 and the victory came in his eighth career start on the circuit. He joined Jack Nicklaus (1990), Tom Kite (2000) and Loren Roberts (2005) as players who have claimed their first career title at the JELD-WEN Tradition.

Eduardo Romero not only became the second international player to claim the JELD-WEN Tradition, joining Austalian Graham Marsh (1999), but he also joined fellow countrymen Roberto DeVicenzo as the second player from Argentina to win a Champions Tour major and also joined Vicente Fernandez as the third Argentinian overall to win on the Champions Tour.

Eduardo Romero picked up 750 Charles Schwab Cup points and moved up into seventh place in the season-long Schwab Cup race. Bobby Wadkins earned 360 points for finishing third this week and moved from fifth position up into third with 1,511 total points. Loren Roberts (2,417 points) continues to lead Jay Haas by 282 points. Brad Bryant is now in fourth place with 1,467 points and Tom Kite rounds out the top five with 1,271 points. At the end of the official season, the points leader will earn a $1-million annuity from Charles Schwab. The Charles Schwab Cup is designed to recognize the Champions Tour’s leading player. The program awards both top finishes and week-in/week-out consistency at all official/Charles Schwab Cup events.

Eduardo Romero earned a check for $375,000 and increased his 2006 official earnings to $606,177 (19th). His win today earned him a full-exemption on the Champions Tour for one calendar year from today and also got him a spot in the season-opening MasterCard Championship at Hualalai for five years.

Eduardo Romero became the first player in the history of the event to open with a round of even par and go on to win and he is also the first JELD-WEN Tradition champion who did not win on the PGA TOUR. He also became the first player since Don Bies (1989 Tradition) to win after shooting a lower score each day over 72 holes.

Eduardo Romero’s 7-under 65 today included just 24 putts and was the low round of the tournament. Romero has now finished among the top two in each of the Champions Tour’s last two majors of the 2006 season. He lost to Loren Roberts in a playoff at the Senior British Open last month.

Lonnie Nielsen’s runner-up effort today was his best finish ever on the Champions Tour. His check for $219,000 was also his largest ever on the circuit.

Larry Nelson’s tie for fourth in this year’s JELD-WEN Tradition is not only his best finish of the 2006 season, but is also his best performance in a senior major since tying for second at the 2000 Ford Senior Players Championship. Nelson will be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame this October.

Tom Kite finished tied for fourth this year and now has been among the top-seven in the JELD-WEN Tradition in four of the last five years. Kite was tied for seventh in 2002, tied for second in 2003, tied for fourth in 2004 and tied for 36th last year. He won this event in 2000 when it was played in Arizona.

Bruce Summerhays made the 10th ace in JELD-WEN Tradition history when his 5-iron shot from 185 yards at the 11th hole found the cup. Summerhays’ ace was the first of his Champions Tour career and was the 10th hole-in-one on the Champions Tour this year.

Ed Dougherty’s scorecard for the tournament was interesting. Dougherty played the front nine each day without making a bogey and was 4-under for the week on the opening nine. However, despite making four more birdies on the back nine for the week, Dougherty played that side in 13-over.

Today’s playoff was the sixth in the 18-year history of the JELD-WEN Tradition and second consecutive at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club. It was also the fifth playoff on the Champions Tour this year and the third overtime session in the last four events.

With 51-year-old Eduardo Romero’s victory today, 12 of the 18 JELD-WEN Traditions have been won by players 53 or younger. Jack Nicklaus is still the youngest winner in tournament history, claiming the 1990 event just two months and 11 days after turning 50.
