BLAINE, Minnesota -- Curtis Strange moved into position for his first Champions Tour victory, shooting a 6-under 66 in windy conditions Saturday to take a three-stroke lead over David Edwards in the Champions Tour's 3M Championship.

Strange, the two-time U.S. Open champion in his second season on the 50-and-over tour, had a 10-under 134 total on the TPC Twin Cities. He was 6 under overall through 13 holes before making his move with birdies on four of the last five holes.

"It's nice to get a little breeze and hit the shots solid and not veer off line. And, No. 2, I made some nice putts on the back side," said Strange, who last led a tournament after two rounds in May 1990.

Edwards, a Tour rookie seeking his first Champions Tour victory, finished with a 68, just missing a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. He birdied three of his first six holes, but had just one more the rest of the way.

"Hopefully, I saved a few birdies for tomorrow," he said. "I'll just keep knocking on the door. Maybe tomorrow is my day."

Edwards has three top-fives this year, including a second-place finish five weeks ago in the Greater Kansas City Golf Classic. He has played in the final group three times.

"I've played reasonably well on Sunday, but other guys have played better," said Edwards, who won four PGA Tour events. "I'm not going to go out there thinking par is good tomorrow. I going to have to play well and make some birdies."

Craig Stadler, who finished second in each of the last two years, was four strokes back after a 67. Morris Hatalsky (66) also was 6 under.

With the wind gusting to 25 mph (40.23 kph), Stadler shot a 30 on the front nine, including six straight birdies. A three-putt at 17 dropped him to 5 under, but he rebounded with a birdie on 18 after just missing an eagle putt.

"Both times I've been here I've finished second," he said. "I needed to get a good one today, and I got off to a good start, but couldn't do much the last eight or 10 holes."

Hatalsky shot a 31 on the front nine, including birdies on four of five holes.

Brad Bryant (70), Bruce Fleisher (69), Hale Irwin (70), former major league pitcher Rick Rhoden (67), Loren Roberts (70) and D.A. Weibring (69) were 5 under, and first-round leader Andy Bean (73) was another stroke back.

Defending champion Tom Purtzer, one back to start the day, shot a 74 to drop eight strokes behind at 2 under.
