Loren Roberts shoots for his fifth overall title on the Champions Tour Sunday and is also trying to claim his second senior major title and fourth victory of the year. Last year, Roberts made his first victory on the Champions Tour a major when he won the JELD-WEN Tradition in Oregon, defeating Dana Quigley in a two-hole playoff. He claimed the first three events of the 2006 season. •Only two players managed to shoot par/better on Saturday. Loren Roberts' 1-under 69 was the only score under par in the third round while Dick Mast managed an even-par 70. Mast's round moved him up from a T17 after Friday into a T4. •Through 54 holes, there are only seven players under par and six of them are from the United States. Last year at Royal Aberdeen through three rounds, just Tom Watson (-3) and Craig Stadler (-2) were in red figures. •Roberts carries a four-shot lead into the final round, the largest in this championship since 2002 when Nomoro Sugai enjoyed a six-stroke advantage after 54 holes. It's also the largest 54-hole lead in a Champions Tour event since Jay Haas was six strokes ahead after three rounds of the season-ending 2005 Charles Schwab Cup Championship. •Roberts' bogey at the par-4 3rd hole ended his bogey-free streak at 42 consecutive holes. Roberts played the last four holes of the Ford Senior Players Championship in Dearborn, Mi. without making a bogey and went the first 38 holes of this week's Senior British Open without a blemish.
• Don Pooley has made quite
a recovery after his Thursday round of 6-over 76. Pooley was T120 after
Round 1, but rallied to make the cut on Friday after firing a 7-under 63
on Friday. The round equaled •The winner of Sunday's Senior British Open Championship will receive double points in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup race. Points in the Schwab Cup race are awarded throughout the year based on top-10 finishes and dollar amounts won in events on a per-thousand basis (i.e. $80,000 equals 80 Charles Schwab Cup points). The points are doubled in all five major championships on the Champions Tour this year. Jay Haas currently leads Roberts by 252 points, followed by Brad Bryant (694), Gil Morgan (767) and Allen Doyle (896). At the end of the official season, the points leader will earn a $1-million annuity from Charles Schwab. The Charles Schwab Cup is designed to recognize the Champions Tour's leading player. The program awards both top finishes and week-in/week-out consistency at all official/Charles Schwab Cup events. •So far this year on the Champions Tour, only seven of 17 events have been won by Saturday leaders/co-leaders. Roberts could become the first 54-hole leader to triumph on the Champions Tour in 2006. •With winds from the southeast blowing at 20-35 mph and a steady rain for most of the day, the field scoring average was 76.28, the highest for any round on the Champions Tour this year. The front nine stroke average today at Turnberry was 36.84 while the back nine averaged 39.44. •The 409-yard, par-4 16th hole played as the most difficult hole in Round 3 with a stroke average of 4.974. None of the 78 players in the field made birdie on the hole and there were only 25 pars. |
