Last week: Jeff Maggert won the St. Jude Classic for his third PGA TOUR title, closing with a 5-under 65 for a three-stroke victory over Tom Pernice Jr. The 42-year-old Maggert won for the first time since the 1999 WGC-Accenture Match Play.

Notes: Jack Nicklaus is not in the field for the first time in tournament history. The 66-year-old Nicklaus founded the event in 1976 and won in 1977 and 1984 titles. ... Tiger Woods, the 1999-01 winner, also is skipping the tournament. He has not played since tying for third in the Masters. His father, Earl, died on May 3. ... Masters champion Phil Mickelson is playing in the event for the first time since 2002. Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen, Stewart Appleby, Sergio Garcia and Jim Furyk also are in the strong field. ... Els won in 2004, closing with consecutive 66s for a four-stroke victory over Couples. ... Jay Haas won the Senior PGA on Sunday for his third straight Champions Tour victory. ... England's David Howell is coming off a victory Sunday in the European tour's BMW Championship. ... Last week: Hee-Won Han won the LPGA Corning Classic for her fifth LPGA Tour title, beating Meena Lee with a par on the fourth hole of a playoff.

Notes: Sorenstam is winless in six events since opening the season with a victory in the MasterCard Classic. She missed the cut three weeks ago at Kingsmill, the first time she failed to qualify for weekend play in a LPGA Tour event since 2002. ... Mexico's Lorena Ochoa and resurgent Australian star Karrie Webb also are in the field. Ochoa has two victories and four second-place finishes in her last six starts, and Webb has two victories and two second-place finishes in her last five tour appearances. ... Michelle Wie will play in a U.S. Open sectional qualifier on Monday at Canoe Brook in Summit, New Jersey. The 16-year-old Wie is attempting to become the first woman to qualify for the tournament. ... The LPGA Championship is next week in Havre de Grace, Maryland.
