Celebrity Q&A with NFL great John Elway

Editor's note: John Elway competed in the BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs earlier this year. While he was there, the legendary NFL player sat down for this Q&A with PGA TOUR media official Joe Chemycz.

PGATOUR.com: The commissioner of the NFL comes to you and says “John, you have a great business sense, you know the game, you know what we want. We’d like you to be the next commissioner of the league.” What do you say?

ELWAY: The next commissioner? I say “no.” I wouldn’t want it. I wouldn’t want to have to mastermind those 32 owners. I think Paul (Tagliabue) has done a great job. That’s obviously a hard job but that’s not a job I’d want. I’d want to be closer to the game.

PGATOUR.com: Is there a better quarterback golfer than you?

ELWAY: Uh, there are a lot of good quarterbacks and there are a lot of good golfers. There’s (Dan) Marino, Danny’s a good player. Billy Joe Tolliver’s a good player. There’s a lot of quarterbacks that are good golfers, am I the best? I don’t know. I’ll leave that up to everybody else to decide.

PGATOUR.com: Tell me about the first time you were on television.

ELWAY: I don’t really remember it. I remember seeing myself on TV, probably in high school. I heard about it on the radio then saw it on TV. I don’t remember much about it.

PGATOUR.com: Do you happen to remember any of the locker combinations you had in high school?

ELWAY: No

PGATOUR.com: How much money do you have on you right now?

ELWAY: (Laughing) Probably $800.

PGATOUR.com: You went to high school in the 70s. Did you ever wear anything made of velour?

ELWAY: (More laughter) No, but I’m waiting for it to come back though. I’ll be ready.

PGATOUR.com: Was Dwight Garner’s knee down in the Big Game in 1982?

ELWAY: Yes. Without a doubt.

PGATOUR.com: Where were you during that final kickoff return against California?

ELWAY: I was on the bench and then all of a sudden I see this big ruckus come by me. Then I saw him cream the trombone player.

PGATOUR.com: During one of the Super Bowl parades in Denver, they named Bannock Street John Elway Boulevard. Shouldn’t they have called it El Way?

ELWAY: There ya go! I like that! We should have thought that through.

PGATOUR.com: When you stand over the ball on the tee, are you tempted to call an audible?

ELWAY: Yea. I like, sometimes, to know more of where it’s going.
