Mickelson is attempting to become the first back-to-back winner since the event moved to the TPC Sugarloaf in 1997. • Australian Gavin Coles, a late replacement in the field when Colin Montgomerie withdrew on Monday evening, fired his lowest score ever on the PGA TOUR. Coles’ 8-under 64 was his best in 144 career rounds on the circuit and included holing a 5-iron second shot from a fairway bunker for an eagle on the par-4 17th hole. His round today was the eighth 64 posted in event history.
• Larry Nelson (1988), Keith Fergus (1982), Hale Irwin (1975), Jack Nicklaus (1973) are the only first-round leader/leaders in the 37-year history of the BellSouth Classic to go on and win.
