• The tournament leaderboard going into Sunday’s final round includes the last two winners -- Hale Irwin (2005) and Mark McNulty (2004) -- as well as Mark James, making his first appearance in this event. The trio is tied for the lead. In addition, two other former champions are in the top six -- Bruce Fleisher (2000, 2003) and Larry Nelson (1999). • Hale Irwin will be bidding for his 45th career victory on the Champions Tour on Sunday. Irwin has enjoyed great success when he has led or been tied for the lead in his Champions Tour career. He has been in that position a total of 39 times and has won 29 times, most recently at the 2005 Wal-Mart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach. • Co-leader Mark McNulty is 2-for-3 as a leader/co-leader with both wins coming in 2004, including the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am. That victory came in his first Champions Tour start. He also won the SBC Championship that year as well. Mark James has only led once in his career, but he won the 2004 Ford Senior Players Championship in that position. • Loren Roberts will begin his quest for a fourth straight win three strokes behind on Sunday. Roberts fired a 2-under-par 69 and trails Irwin, McNulty and James by three strokes. He is currently tied for seventh. • A total of 240 points in the year-long Charles Schwab Cup race will be awarded to Sunday’s champion. Loren Roberts leads with 755 points followed by Don Pooley (309) and Tom Watson (253). Neither Pooley or Watson are in the field.
• Since the tournament moved to the Tournament Players Club of Tampa Bay in 1992, the second-round leader/co-leader has only won the event four times in 14 events. Dave Stockton, who was tied with Dave Eichelberger after 36 holes in 1995, was the first, posting a two-stroke win over three players -- Bob Charles, J.C. Snead and Jim Colbert. Larry Nelson (1999), Bruce Fleisher (2000) and Mark McNulty (2004) all were in sole possession of the lead after 36 holes and went on to win. • Of the previous 18 winners of this event, 10 came from behind the final day to win the tournament, including Rocky Thompson, who came from seven back on Sunday to win in 1994. Thompson certainly didn’t hurt his cause with a closing-round, 10-under-par 61 in the final round. That was the best closing round by a winner until Loren Roberts matched the feat at this year’s MasterCard Championship at Hualalai. Jack Nicklaus, also made up a large margin with his win in 1996. Trailing Isao Aoki by five strokes after 36 holes, Nicklaus fired a final-round 67 to win the event by a stroke over J.C. Snead. • In the pro-am portion of the event, the team of John Jacobs and Ron Campbell holds a three-stroke margin over the team of Jay Haas and Fred Paglia. Campbell is President of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Among the 12 teams advancing were Curtis Strange and tennis star Jim Courier as well as Des Smyth and Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ linebacker Derrick Brooks. Larry Nelson and his partner, broadcaster Joe Theismann, also advanced. • Loren Roberts increased his string of consecutive rounds of par or lower to 11 with another round of 69. That is the best current streak on the Champions Tour. |
