KAHUKU, Hawaii -- Loren Roberts moved a step closer to a second consecutive victory on the Champions Tour, shooting his second straight 6-under 66 on to take a four-stroke lead over Scott Simpson in the Turtle Bay Championship on Saturday. The 50-year-old Roberts, coming off a record-setting victory last Sunday in the MasterCard Championship in Hualalai, had a tournament-record 12-under 132 total on Turtle Bay's Arnold Palmer Course. "It's not easy," Roberts said. "I just happen to catch a couple weeks where I'm doing a lot of things right and I'm putting well." Last week, Roberts had a 25-under 191 total on the Hualalai course to shatter the Champions Tour record for relation to par in a 54-hole event and tie the stroke mark. He also broke the Tour record for birdies in a three-round tournament with 26. Scott Simpson shot a 67, and R.W. Eaks matched the course record with a 65 to join Japan's Isao Aoki (66), Bruce Summerhays (70) and Don Pooley (69) at 7 under. For the first time since 1999, Hale Irwin won't be hoisting the turtle-shaped trophy. Irwin, seeking his sixth straight and seventh overall Turtle Bay title, shot a 77 for a two-day total of 6-over 150. "It's been just awful. Including the pro-am, I've not made a birdie in 54 holes. Right now, I'm not a very good player," Irwin said. "There's nothing in my game that's worth talking about. That's the game. You take your lumps and I'll be back." Irwin, who has won a record 44 Champions Tour titles, said he was pressing to make a birdie. He tied for 21st in the winners-only field of 35 last week at Hualalai. "This has been a particularly tough week, simply because I was looking so forward to being here," the 60-year-old star said. Roberts, an eight-time winner on the PGA TOUR who joined the Champions Tour last July and won the JELD-WEN Tradition in August for his first major victory, is trying to become the first player to win his first two starts of a season since Larry Nelson in 2001. The putting star looked calm and relaxed, smiling and munching on an apple during his round. After bogeying No. 2, he played nearly flawless. He had seven birdies to give him 40 in his first five Champions Tour rounds of the year. The wind rattled the flags on the pins and some of the players, but Roberts made it look easy and even got some help along the way. Pooley's approach shot on the 408-yard No. 17 struck Roberts' ball, moving it several inches closer to the cup. Roberts then sank the 10-foot birdie putt to move to 11 under and take a four-stroke advantage. Pooley, who lost to Roberts by a stroke at the MasterCard Championship, missed his birdie putt. Simpson sank a 2-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to take sole possession of second place. His birdie putt was set up by a 5-iron shot from 190 yards. Simpson, who lived in nearby Kailua for five years, began the day three strokes behind Roberts. Eaks three putted the par-3 eighth for his lone bogey of the round. He had eight birdies and only 27 putts in the round. Eaks wasn't too confident about catching Roberts on Sunday. "Only if he goes home," said Eaks, whose best finish on the Tour is a fourth-place tie last year in the SBC Championship. "That's the only way a guy can catch him. He's playing real well right now. He's got the momentum going. "I'd say it's his tournament."
