CARLSBAD, Calif. – Geoff Ogilvy
continued his surprising run in his first World Golf
Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship, grabbing a narrow 1-up
advantage over Davis Love III after the
first 18 of a tight 36-hole title match.
“It will be a tough match this afternoon,” Love said at the lunch break.
“Geoff has played some great golf this week and came in today on a roll.
Somebody has to grab some momentum and make some birdies.”
Neither player held more than a 1-up lead Sunday morning – and the first
hole wasn’t won until the par-5 11th when Love rolled in a 4-footer for
birdie.
That all-important momentum shifted dramatically three holes later,
though, when Love missed a 4-footer for a winning par at the 14th hole.
He then made double bogey on No. 15 after driving into the right rough,
hitting his second into the left greenside bunker and leaving his third
in the sand.
Suddenly, the match was even again.
“I had a terrible lie,” Love said. “The ball was up against the slope.
But the whole thing was the tee shot. You can’t miss a fairway on an
easy hole like that.
The opportunistic Ogilvy promptly took advantage of the momentum change
on the par-3 16th when he hit a 6-iron to 6 feet and made birdie to go 1
up. Both players birdied the par-5 18th – where Ogilvy missed a
23-footer for eagle to win another hole.
“There is no question that little putt he missed (at No. 14) changed
things a bit,” Ogilvy said. “But there are still 18 holes to play so one
shot is nothing. We are almost starting from scratch again.
“I hit it better the last four or five holes than I did the first 13,
where I was a bit scrappy. But I hit a great shot on the 16th and two
great shots at the 18th, so I am looking forward to the afternoon.”
