Seven of the eight matches on Friday were won by lower seeds, as two No. 1 seeds (Woods, Singh) and three No. 2 seeds (Toms, Mickelson, DiMarco) were eliminated. The 2001 previous had six lower-seed winners advance to the quarterfinals.

For the second consecutive year, Retief Goosen is the only No. 1 seed to survive into the quarterfinals. Goosen is 8-1 over the last two years at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship after logging a 3-5 record in his first five starts at the event.

David Toms streak of eight consecutive match victories at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship ended at eight with his loss to Tom Lehman on Friday.
