Seven of the eight matches on Friday were won by lower seeds, as two No.
1 seeds (Woods, Singh) and three No. 2 seeds (Toms, Mickelson, DiMarco)
were eliminated. The 2001 previous had six lower-seed winners advance to
the quarterfinals.
• For the second consecutive year, Retief Goosen is the
only No. 1 seed to survive into the quarterfinals. Goosen is 8-1 over
the last two years at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play
Championship after logging a 3-5 record in his first five starts at the
event.
• David Toms streak of eight consecutive match victories at
the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship ended at eight with his loss
to Tom Lehman on Friday.
• Geoff Ogilvy is the lone first-time WGC-Accenture Match
Play Championship participant still alive among the original eight.
Ogilvy is also the last of the 10 Australians that started the week.
• Geoff Ogilvy is the marathon man of the 2006
WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship -- he has gone extra holes in all
three matches and has played a total of 61 holes. He ended two matches
with birdies and one with an eagle.
• No. 15 seed Zach Johnson, competing in his second
WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, is the highest-seeded player
still remaining.
• Retief Goosen has yet to trail in his three matches -- he
has led in 42 of 49 holes he has played this week.
