Blog: Putts drop for Villegas on front nine, but not on back

Editor’s note: Camilo Villegas, who recently completed a successful rookie campaign on the PGA TOUR, is representing Colombia at the World Golf Championships-Barbados World Cup this week. Villegas took some time to write this blog after teaming with Manuel Merizalde to shoot a 66 in the third round that left the Colombians 10 strokes off the lead.

ST. JAMES, Barbados -- Today was unbelievable. There's no other word to describe it. I putted so well on the front, and I putted exactly the same on the back -- but they just didn't fall in. I kept hitting the lips and rolling great putts and hitting good shots. But, man, I'm really proud of the way I've played this week. It's just one of those weeks, it can go either way and unfortunately, even though I've played really well, it could have been so much better.

We’ve had fun, though. We had great weather today and I'm representing my country. It is frustrating and it is tough, but, hey, there's not much you can do about it. When you're hitting such good putts, you shouldn't be getting frustrated because you’ve done all you can do. There's so many variables in hitting a putt, especially on Bermuda greens, with so much wind, that you just can't control. You just do what you can do and keep going.

I made some great putts on the front, though. I had a tough putt on No. 2 but it dropped in for my first birdie. I made another at the fifth hole. It barely trickled in -- another half a revolution less and it's not in the hole -- but I got that one. Then I hit the best shot I've hit all week at No. 6, the par 5. I hit a 3-wood into the wind with a little draw just the way I thought about it and hit it on the green and two-putted for birdie. At the seventh hole, I was trying to two-putt and it happened to go in. That was a great putt -- and a bonus. Then on No. 9, I hit my tee shot into the rough but I played smart. Buddy talked me into a 7-iron, just to play it safe. We got it back into the fairway and we hit another 7-iron for our third shot, then rolled a little tricky putt down the hill for the fifth birdie of the day. So it was a fun front nine, and it was some good golf on the back nine, but like I said, I didn’t get the same results.

It's one of those weeks. It's one of those days. I mean, 5 under is not bad, but it could have been 9 or 10 under, easily. I just have to come back with a great attitude for tomorrow. I feel great with my play the entire week. It's been a fun week. I just need to come back tomorrow and have my partner nice and relaxed on the first tee and go have fun.
