ST. JAMES, Barbados -- The R&B singer Rihanna, who was named Female Artist of the Year at the Billboard Music Awards this year, was born in Barbados in 1988. On Thursday, though, it was another woman of Caribbean descent who was turning heads at Sandy Lane. Word spread quickly when supermodel Naomi Campbell was visiting the Volunteer Center to chat with some of the Bajans (which is how people from Barbados refer to themselves) who would be spending the rest of the day as walking scorers and marshals. She had already left by the time we got over there, or else I would have taken a picture to show you. She should be used to photographers, right? Of course, I’d want to check to see if she had a cell phone first.

Watch TV back in the hotel, and you’d almost think you were back in the United States. Among the channels available is a U.S. affiliate of each of the three major networks, as well as ESPN, CNN and the BBC. We were even able to watch the Florida-Arkansas game on Saturday night. Barbados is one hour ahead of ET, though, so everything comes on 60 minutes later than we’re used to seeing it. The weird thing is, though, the NBC affiliate is from New York City -- so the morning weather updates don’t exactly jibe with what you see looking out the sliding glass doors to your room. Snow flurries today, the weatherman was telling me as the waves lapped against the sandy beach.

Barbados’ closest neighbor to the south is Trinidad and Tobago. Stephen Ames, who won THE PLAYERS Championship earlier this year, is representing his homeland in the World Golf Championships-Barbados World Cup. He’s playing with his brother, Robert, who used to caddy for Stephen but is now embarking on a professional career of his own. Stephen, who now lives with his wife in Canada and has dual citizenship, was talking Wednesday about how good it was to be playing a tournament so close to his native Trinidad and Tobago. “I guess half the island is here and the other half is swimming over -- that’s how close it is,” Stephen said. Their parents are here, as well as many friends, “so we’ve been entertained, wined and dined every night, which is nice,” he said. The two brothers got down to business today, though, and shot 1 under in the opening Four-ball round.
