NBC special highlights 2006 PGA TOUR season, offers '07 preview

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- From Phil Mickelson capturing his third major title at the Masters and Stephen Ames’ win at THE PLAYERS Championship, to Geoff Ogilvy’s down-to-the-wire victory at the U.S. Open, 2006 was full of memorable moments on the PGA TOUR.

"PGA TOUR 2006…Get Ready! Presented by FedEx" is an NBC Sports special airing Sunday, December 17 at 3 p.m. ET that will offer highlights from the 2006 season, as well as a look ahead at the 2007 debut of the FedExCup. Winners of the Player and Rookie of the Year awards also will be revealed during this hour-long show, hosted by Jimmy Roberts and produced by PGA TOUR Productions.

A look back at 2006 wouldn’t be complete without chronicling Tiger Woods' perseverance following the devastating loss of his father, Earl, to cancer in May. After taking a nine-week hiatus, Woods finally returned for the U.S Open in mid-June, only to miss the cut at a major championship for the first time as a professional. But then Woods launched a six-event winning streak at the British Open, bringing his PGA TOUR career victory total to a remarkable 54 at the age of 30, fifth best of all-time.

"PGA TOUR 2006…Get Ready! Presented by FedEx" also will provide a preview of next year’s highly anticipated FedExCup, the PGA TOUR’s dramatic season-long points bonus competition culminating with a first-ever, four-tournament playoff. In what has been deemed a “New Era in Golf,” fans will get an exclusive overview of the exciting changes coming in 2007, including a rundown on the schedule, preview of the new points system and a look at the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. Viewers will hear from PGA TOUR stars such as Woods, Mickelson and Vijay Singh as they candidly discuss what winning the first-ever FedExCup trophy would mean to them.
