World-Class Events and Global fields
World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions
HSBC has spearheaded the arrival of world class golf events in Asia. The WGC-HSBC Champions in China and its sister tournament, the HSBC Women's Champions in Singapore, have both become global golf brands, assisted by HSBC's presence and insight in the region. We remain committed to the success of these events and to championing golf throughout Asia.
Created in November 2005, the HSBC Champions was established to pull in the world's best male golfers to compete in an elite event that forms the bedrock of HSBC's global golf program. In 2009 the event was granted World Golf Championship (WGC); reflecting the growing reputation of our flagship golf tournament. With this WGC status we are also afforded rights and hospitality at the remaining WGC events in the USA.
In addition to our commitment to the professional game, HSBC has a longer-term goal to build a legacy by sponsoring youth development and grassroots programs around the world.
In China, the HSBC-sponsored China National Junior Team, the HSBC China Junior Open and the HSBC National Junior Golf Championship (a year-long series of tournaments designed to give China's elite junior golfers the competitive platform they need to develop their game) have created a framework around which the sport can evolve.
HSBC Women's Champions
Inaugurated in 2008, the HSBC Women's Champions attracts the best of the best in women's golf. Now in its fifth year, this event is often described as ‘Asia's Major’ in women's golf. Players qualify by winning tournaments on the LPGA Tour or finishing the year in the Top 20 on the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings.
The HSBC Women's Champions provides us with an opportunity to host our best corporate and private customers in a country where we have a long and distinguished heritage.
In Singapore, HSBC Youth Golf Challenge tournaments are played throughout the year, involving thousands of children of all levels. It gives them the opportunity to learn and to compete in a sport that will equip them with skills for life, regardless of whether or not they choose ultimately to pursue a professional golfing career.
Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship
Teeing off in 2006 and quickly becoming established as a favorite event for players and spectators alike, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship is now one of the biggest events on the PGA European Tour, regularly attracting some of golf's most famous names.
HSBC began its five-year joint-title sponsorship in 2011. The 2012 competition boasted the strongest field ever to compete in the Middle East, with England's Robert Rock clinching an unlikely National Course victory.
Participants included the world's top four players, six of the world's top ten, three current holders of Major titles and 14-time Major winner Tiger Woods, making his Abu Dhabi debut.
