Round 2 notebook: A few unusual happenings at TPC Sawgrass

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- PGA TOUR rules official Brian Claar did his best to clean up a messy situation on the No. 16 green Friday.

Claar was called in by the group of Zach Johnson, Carl Pettersson, and John Rollins to provide a ruling on the removal of a rather large buildup of sea gull droppings between the ball and the cup. Claar brushed off the green in order to provide a proper putting surface

Claar said it was the first time in his eight years as a rules official that he has been asked to remove bird poop.

"By rule, they could have cleaned it up," Claar said. "But they wanted me to do it."

FAMILY AFFAIR: Here's a story they'll be able to laugh about and tell the grandkids.

Alex Prugh wasn't the only player to hit an errant tee shot at the par-5 16th hole Friday. But he was probably the only one whose shot accidentally struck a family member -- specifically, his wife Katie.

Sergei Ourusaff, the No. 16 hole captain, said that a first aid crew acted quickly to treat Katie, who was standing in the native area left of the fairway.

Katie was struck in the thigh and treated for a minor bruise with an icepack.

HELPING HAND: Michael Bradley was standing on the 7th tee, casually holding his driver when it slipped out of his hands and into the water.

"It was funny," Bradley told the Associated Press. "I didn't really realize I was so close to the water. When I dropped it, it just kind of bounded and I was just watching it, going, 'Oh, crap, what did I do?' The head of the driver went, 'boop,' and over it went. I'm like, 'Oh my God, what did you just do?'"

Considering the water was quite a few feet below the tee box, it was no easy chore to get it back. But a fan came to his rescue, climbing down the side of the bulkhead and retrieving the driver with the help of another club out of Bradley's bag.

Surprisingly, the driver was still on top of the water. Analyst Nick Faldo, watching the scene unfold on The Golf Channel, observed, "I didn't know a driver floats. How useful is that?"

Words actually don't do justice to this story. Just check out the video above.

LOVIN' THAT PAR 3: FedExCup leader Bubba Watson feels very much at home on No. 3 at TPC Sawgrass.

Not only is the house that he and Ben Crane rent with their families in the proximity of the par-3 hole, but he's birdied it for the second day in a row Friday on his way to a bogey-free round of 66 that leaves him 2 under for the tournament and hoping to make a move on the weekend.

Friday's birdie -- Watson knocked his tee shot inside 10 feet -- started a joking chatter among fans that maybe Watson was practicing his putting at night on the green. But that's not the case.

Apparently when he's off the course, he's been spotted in the swimming pool trying to cool off from the 90-degree temperatures.

Crane, who narrowly made the cut at even par, was not as productive on No. 3, recording pars both days.

BARBER SHOPPER: What did we learn about Hunter Mahan on Friday? That he doesn't have a regular hair stylist.

In discussing his beard -- the topic seems to be a popular one this week, coming off Lucas Glover's win last week at the Wells Fargo Championship -- Mahan revealed his grooming habits.

"I don't like to do the same thing every week," he said. "I don't get my hair cut at the same place every time. I go somewhere different. I don't know, I guess it's just the way I roll."
