Ten years later, Woods is still looking for his next win at TPC Sawgrass.
His next shot comes this week, of course, at the 2011 PLAYERS Championship. Woods, who opted not to play in last week's Wells Fargo Championship due to a minor leg injury, is hoping to end a TOUR-winning drought that extends to the 2009 BMW Championship.
It may not be easy for Tiger this week. In his eight starts since that 2001 PLAYERS win, he has just one top-10 finish. Last year, he was forced to withdraw in the final round with a neck injury.
PGATOUR.COM took a look at some key ShotLink numbers for Tiger at TPC Sawgrass.
In his four PLAYERS appearances from 1999-2002, Woods ranked in the top 10 in the field each year in greens in regulation. Twice, he was the No. 1 player in the field in greens in regulation. In those four years, he finished inside the top 15 on the leaderboard each year, including his win in 2001 when he ranked ninth in greens in regulation. In his seven PLAYERS appearances since 2002, Woods has never ranked inside the top 10 in greens in regulation, and only one time has he ranked inside the top 30.
During his lone PLAYERS win in 2001, Woods ranked fifth in the field in scrambling at 68 percent. Only one other time has he ranked inside the top 10 in that category (in 1997, his first PLAYERS appearance, when he ranked seventh). In three of his last four visits to TPC Sawgrass, his scrambling percentage has been 56 percent or worse.
Since players' putting distance stats were tracked in 2002, the year after Tiger's win, Woods has never ranked inside the top 20 in putts made from inside 10 feet but three times ranked inside the top 20 in putts made outside 10 feet.
When he won in 2001, Woods' driving accuracy percentage was 63 percent. But he's failed to reach 60 percent in five of his last six PLAYERS appearances.
Woods made 19 birdies and five bogeys when he won in 2001. Not surprisingly, he's never made as many birdies or as few bogeys in any of his other PLAYERS appearances.
Woods has posted rounds in the 60s just twice in his last 13 rounds at TPC Sawgrass. When he won in 2001, each of his final three rounds were in the 60s. Woods has never posted a first round in the 60s at THE PLAYERS.
In 2001, Woods was tied for eighth after 36 holes before he went on to win. In his eight appearances since then, he has never been inside the top 20 after the second round. His best position during that stretch was a 20th in 2006.
In 2009, Woods was tied for second, five shots behind Alex Cejka after 54 holes. That was Woods' best 54-hole position since his win in 2001, when he was also tied for second through three rounds. Woods shot a 67 to win in 2001 but shot a 73 in 2009 to finish in eighth. Woods has carded just two final rounds in the 60s at TPC Sawgrass (in 2001 and 2007, when he shot 67 as one of the early starters).
The only time Tiger has been under par cumulatively on either the par 3s or par 4s at TPC Sawgrass came during his win in 2001, when he was a collective 3 under on the par 4s that week (see chart below)
