Editor's note; Bill Haas, the reigning FedExCup champion, is playing in his first Presidents Cup this week at Royal Melbourne. The three-time TOUR champ is following in the footsteps of his dad, Jay, who played in two Presidents Cups and serves as an assistant captain this week for the second time. Bill will be doing an exclusive blog this week for PGATOUR.COM and this is his third installment.

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Unfortunately, nobody cares whether you lose 5 and 4 or 1 down, it's disappointing. Nick and I had our chances against Geoff and K.J. but we just couldn't get it done. I had a chance on No. 17 and hit a terrible putt. Nick had a good look there at the 18th and just barely left it short, so we lost 1 down. It doesn't feel very good right now.

Even though we lost, we didn't really give them much all day. Nick and I both bogeyed the 12th and that was it. I'll bet there were more holes out there today won with pars and there was only one in our group, and that was it. We didn't play badly. We just didn't make a ton of putts. They holed one out of the bunker and they made one across the green, and that was the difference in the match.

The conditions were very challenging with the wind today. If this were a stroke-play event it would have been very difficult, but when you've got a partner it makes it a little different out there. It's disappointing. It almost feels worse that our match went to the last hole, I think. The good thing is, we were doing some good things. We were hitting the ball decent. So hopefully tomorrow with 36 holes and a bunch of matches to be played, who knows what can happen.

We're still leading 7-5. Bubba and Webb are obviously playing some super golf and we need them to keep doing that to take up our slack. If they can keep that up, we're looking good. The mood in the team room last night was very good. Obviously we felt like we came out on top yesterday pretty well. A couple of the matches that we looked like we were going to lose, we ended up halving, so that was great.

It was more joyous in the team room than it's going to be tonight. With them winning those last two matches there, it was huge -- those were confidence swingers and all that. We needed one of those matches to maybe go our way, and out match was maybe the most likely. We didn't get the job done, but we split the day and if we split the day the rest of the way, we're in good shape.
