Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge, benefiting The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, is the only professional golf tournament that pits three players from the PGA TOUR, LPGA and Champions Tour against each other in a head-to-head competition for tour bragging rights and a share of the $1 million purse.
Mark Calcavecchia, Jay Haas and Kenny Perry will represent the Champions Tour in the competition, held Nov. 8 at Rio Secco Golf Club in Las Vegas. The competition will be aired Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. ET on Golf Channel.
Calcavecchia is enjoying tremendous success in his first full year on the Champions Tour. In August he recorded his first victory at the Boeing Classic to go with 17 top-25 finishes in 19 events entered so far this season. Calcavecchia currently ranks No. 1 in top-10 finishes on Tour with 12 and is No. 2 and No.3 in Charles Schwab Cup Points and on the Champions Tour money list respectively. The 30-year Tour veteran has 13 career PGA TOUR victories to his credit, including the 1989 British Open Championship. He has played in four Ryder Cups (1987, 1989, 1991 and 2002) and one Presidents Cup (1998).
Calcavecchia turned 50 in June of 2010 and promptly entered his first Champions Tour event at the Dick's Sporting Goods Open, where he finished tied for sixth. In an abbreviated 14 event 2010 season he finished the year with 6 top-10 finishes, including a runner-up effort at the 3M Championship. This will be Calcavecchia's fourth Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge appearance. He was a member of the PGA TOUR team in his three previous trips, recording victories in 2001 with John Daly and Fred Couples and in 2003 with Daly and Peter Jacobsen.
Haas has been one of the most dominant players on the Champions Tour over the past five years. He was the Tour's Rookie of the Year in 2005 and recorded his first victory in just his seventh career start at the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn. He has since won a staggering 14 times, including two majors at the 2006 and 2008 Senior PGA Championships. Also, in 2006 and 2008, Haas won the Charles Schwab Cup and was the leading money winner two years in a row in 2006 and '07. With one victory and five top-10 finishes so far in 2011, he is currently ranked No. 20 in Charles Schwab Cup Points and No. 15 on the Champions Tour money list.
Haas will be making his seventh appearance for the 20th anniversary of the Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge. He played in his previous six Wendy's 3-Tour events consecutively from 2004 to 2009. He was a member of the 2006, 2007, 2009 and victorious 2005 and 2008 Champions Tour teams and joined Fred Couples and John Daly on the 2004 PGA TOUR team. Haas has been a model of consistency and sportsmanship over his more than 30-year professional career that includes nine PGA TOUR victories. In 2006 he received the Bob Jones Award from the U.S.G.A., the highest honor given by the U.S.G.A. in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf. He has been a member of three Ryder Cup teams (1983, 1995 and 2004) and three Presidents Cup teams, two as a player (1994, 2003) and one as an Assistant Captain in 2009. Haas will reprise his role as an Assistant Captain this November in Australia for the 2011 Presidents Cup.
Perry will be making his third appearance at the Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge; in 2008 he joined Stewart Cink and Rocco Mediate as a member of the PGA TOUR team and in 2010 made his Champions Tour debut at Rio Secco with Bernhard Langer and Nick Price. Perry, who turned 50 in August of 2010, has enjoyed a late surge of success on the PGA TOUR. Last year he recorded five top-20 finishes and his two victories in 2009 gave him his fourth career multi win season and second in a row after posting three first place finishes in 2008. Also in 2008 and 2009 Perry finished a career-high 5th on the PGA TOUR money list earning $4,663,794 (career high) and $4,445,562 respectively. He made 53 straight cuts on the PGA TOUR from Jan. 20, 2008 to March 21, 2010.
The Kentucky native and 14-time winner on the PGA TOUR has been a member of two Ryder Cup teams (2004 and 2008) and four Presidents Cup teams (1996, 2003, 2005, and 2009) during his more than 25 years as a professional. Perry, who continues to compete on the PGA TOUR, has finished in the top-25 in all nine Champions Tour events he's entered so far in 2011. On strength of six top-10 finishes, including his first Champions Tour victory at last week's SAS Championship, Perry is currently ranked No. 14 in Charles Schwab Cup points and No. 13 on the Champions Tour money list.
