Player notes
Here are some of the players you'll see on NBC's coverage of Round 4:
RORY McILROY
This is McIlroys second career third-round lead on TOUR. His other third-round lead came earlier this year at the Masters. If McIlroy goes onto victory he would be one of nine players 22-years-old and under with multiple wins with at least one of the wins being a major. The others are Tiger Woods, Gene Sarazen, Young Tom Morris, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Creavy, Johnny McDermott, Seve Ballesteros and Jerry Pate.
JASON DAY
In his first career start at the U.S. Open, 23-year-old Jason Day is looking for his third straight top 10 in a major (T2/2011 Masters, T10/2010 PGA Championship). His only other start in a major was at the 2010 British Open (T60). Day has been in the top 4 heading into the final round at the last three majors (2010 PGA Championship, 2011 Masters and 2011 U.S. Open).
Y.E. YANG
Yang, who ranks 42nd in the current FedExCup standings, missed his last two cuts (THE PLAYERS and FedEx St. Jude Classic) coming into this week and three of his last four overall on TOUR. Yang trailed Tiger Woods by six strokes after 36 holes at the 2009 PGA Championship. Woods was the 36-hole leader and Yang was T9 after the first two rounds. Yang trailed McIlroy by six shots after the first two rounds at Congressional.
