One of the themes for the 2011 PGA TOUR season is the competition involving the Establishment vs. the New Breed. How will the established players -- those with significant TOUR experience and long-standing championship pedigree -- fare against the young, hungry up-and-comers who are looking to nudge their way into the TOUR's elite?

Each week, PGATOUR.COM will select two players -- one from the New Breed and one for the Establishment -- and analyze their chances heading into the tournament. We'll then track which player has the better score for his team, and keep a running team tally throughout the year.

This week for the Masters Tournament, we've selected a pair of world No. 1s -- Tiger Woods for the Establishment and Martin Kaymer for the New Breed. The American held the top spot for a total of 623 weeks before being dethroned on Halloween while Kaymer is in his sixth straight week at the top of the Official World Golf Ranking.

Woods is one of six players who could overtake Kaymer this week at the Masters. Click here to read more about the possible changes at the top of the Official World Golf Ranking and follow the two this week at Augusta National.

ESTABLISHMENT
AGE: 35
YEARS ON TOUR: Woods is competing in his 15th full season on the PGA TOUR. He has won 71 times and has 14 majors, four of which came at Augusta National.
OVERVIEW: As impressive as his record is, Woods has not won a PGA TOUR event since the 2009 BMW Championship as he continues to rebuild his swing for the third time in his career. The 18-month victory drought is also the longest since he turned pro in 1996. Woods only has four top-10s on TOUR during that span -- but two of those have come in majors, ties for fourth at last year's Masters and U.S. Open. His best finish in four starts this year is a tie for 10th at the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship. He's hitting less than 50 percent of his fairways (47.62, to be exact) but still managing to find 67.59 percent of his greens. The flat stick has been problematic, though -- he ranks 107th in putting average and 86th in putts per round and those putts he used to seem to will into the hole aren't dropping. And the man who led the TOUR in scoring average from 2005-2009 currently ranks 108th in that category with an average of 71.17.
HISTORY IN THIS EVENT: Woods is one of just three players with four or more victories at the Masters -- tied with Arnold Palmer and two behind Jack Nicklaus' four wins. He has 11 top-10s in 16 Masters and has not finished lower than sixth since his last victory in 2005.
OUTLOOK THIS WEEK: You can never count Woods out at the Masters. Even a year ago -- after his world was rocked by scandal -- Woods tied for fourth at Augusta National in his first start of the season. He's played 62 rounds and broken par in 35 of those while only shooting 11 of 73 or higher.

NEW BREED
AGE: 26
YEARS ON TOUR: Kaymer is not a member of the PGA TOUR. He's played the European Tour since 2007 and has nine victories, including last year's PGA Championship.
OVERVIEW: The young German has won five times in the last 15 months as he climbed the world rankings and ended Lee Westwood's 17-week reign at No. 1 when Kaymer finished second at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship. Kaymer really came of age, though, when he beat Bubba Watson in a playoff at the PGA Championship last August. He won his next two starts as well, and opened the 2011 season with a successful title defense in Abu Dhabi, his third victory there in the last four years. His results in the months since have been mixed, though. His runner-up to Luke Donald at Dove Mountain is his only other top-10 in seven starts on either side of the Atlantic.
HISTORY IN THIS EVENT: Kaymer's history at the Masters is hardly what you'd expect of the world No. 1. He has played at Augusta National three times and has yet to make the cut. He's only broken par once in those six rounds and Kaymer has yet to shoot in the 60s. His scoring average is 74 and he's a cumulative 12 over.
OUTLOOK THIS WEEK: Kaymer is philosophical about his lack of success at Augusta National. "It can only get better," Kaymer said. "If you miss the cut three times, then I think it cannot get really worse." Toward that end, he changed his routine leading up to the Masters. The past two years, he's played the week before at the Shell Houston Open. Not in 2011, though. He's taken the last two weeks off -- spending one practicing at his home in Scottsdale, then bringing his family to Georgia and playing several other courses in the area to get used to the conditions.

Kaymer owns lackluster Masters record
OK. So he hasnt made a cut in three previous starts at Augusta National. Martin Kaymer is still the No. 1 player in the world with five wins in the last 15 months. So it would be folly to count the reigning PGA champ out even though his track record at the Masters leaves something to be desired. Story | Video interview
