TAMPA, Fla. -- The Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am announced that Fred Couples will make his mark in Tampa as he debuts at the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am. Couples just turned 50 this year and has only competed in four Champions Tour events, finishing second in his debut and winning three straight since. After contending in The Masters, he will play in his fifth Champions Tour event at the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am on April 12-18 at TPC Tampa Bay.
"This commitment from Freddy creates a new excitement for our tournament," said Amy Hawk, tournament director of the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am. "He is definitely taking the Champions Tour by storm and we are thrilled he is making his way to Tampa. We are all anxious to see if he can join Chi Chi Rodriguez to be the second player ever to win four straight on the Champions Tour."
Couples is the first player in history to win three of his first four events. He is the eighth player ever to win three straight Champions Tour tournaments and the first since Jay Haas in 2006. Couples has won 15 PGA TOUR events including one major, the Masters in 1992. He has been named PGA TOUR Player of the Year twice, in 1991 and 1992. He also won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average each of those years. Because of his long drives, Couples has been given the nickname "Boom Boom."
Couples will join some of other A-List professional commitments like Bernhard Langer, Tom Watson, Fred Funk, Mark O'Meara, Hale Irwin and Loren Roberts.
Recently elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, NFL running back Emmitt Smith will also tee-off at the 2010 Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am. Other participating celebrities are Michael J. Fox, George Lopez, Vince Gill, Stone Phillips, Vinny Testaverde, Joe Theismann, Derrick Brooks, and Rondé Barber.
The 2010 Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am will take place on April 12-18 at TPC Tampa Bay in Lutz, Fla. Tickets are available for purchase by calling the tournament office at 813-265-4653 or visiting http://www.outbackproam.com/.
