Torrential rain suspends Round 1 of Puerto Rico Open

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Heavy rain has forced organizers to suspend play on the opening day of the PGA TOUR's Puerto Rico Open presented by Banco Popular.

Steady downpours on Thursday washed out the first round on the 7,526-yard Trump International course in Rio Grande. Six inches of rain had fallen on the tropical, oceanside course by early afternoon.

The first round was rescheduled for Friday morning, with preferred lies in closely mown areas.

Before play was first suspended at 7:19 a.m., Skip Kendall hit an eagle on the par-4 10th hole when his 7-iron from 159 yards out found the cup. Only 18 players teed off prior to the suspension.

The $3.5 million tournament in Puerto Rico is being held opposite the World Golf Championships-CA Championship, which has attracted the best players from around
