EXPERT PREVIEW: PGA TOUR NETWORK on-site correspondent Doug Bell previews Friday's action:
Padraig Harrington came to Memphis on an injury rehab assignment. Two weeks ago, he underwent arthriscopic surgery on his right knee, after injuring it back in December while playing football, or soccer, depending on where you're from. He admits that he was apprehensive and sore coming into the St. Jude Classic and was pleasantly surprised by his opening-round 65. He has developed an unusual way to read putts by leaning forward on his left knee, in hopes of taking pressure off his right side. It's not Camillo Villegas, but it's close. He laughed when I called it the Irish spider.
Talk about low expectations. Most people didn't give Casey Wittenberg much of a chance playing in his first PGA TOUR event of the year, but those people didn't realize the Memphis native is playing on his home course. Wittenberg, who made his home at TPC Southwind several years ago, plays most of his rounds here. He loves the bermuda greens, and arguably knows them better than any other player in the field. In the opening round, the 25-year-old tallied only 25 putts, including nine one-putt greens.
