MORE INTERVIEWS: Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial transcript archive

Q. Phil, thanks very much, I want to thank you, not too many players will stick around to do an interview. What happened?

PHIL MICKELSON: I played terrible. I don't know what to say. I haven't played the course since the changes. The changes are fabulous. The course is in great shape. There was no wind and there were a lot of birdies out there. And Mike, I just played terrible. But I will take the weekend. It's a good barometer for me to know that starting my U.S. Open run, which is here, I've got a lot of work to do.

Q. For future plans, it's got to be a tough decision, do you stay or do you go home and spend some extra time with the family?

PHIL MICKELSON: Well, I'm going to go home and spend it with Amy in San Diego. It's the coolest thing that's ever been done for myself, for Amy and all of the women who have breast cancer.

This is a very cool emotional support from the Colonial membership, the TOUR wives, directors, have done here for everyone.

So although I'm not going to be here to partake in it, I will be wearing pink tomorrow.

Q. I know earlier in the week you were looking forward to a very, very good week especially because of what you're doing here. (Inaudible.) I'm curious, did you really need to perform well here, was there any extra pressure at all?

PHIL MICKELSON: I wasn't sure how I was going to play. I thought I was playing really well. I had some good practice sessions. As it turned out, I'm a little bit rustier than I thought. I'll get home and get some practice in and see if I can get this thing turned around.

Q. Any comments on the round?

PHIL MICKELSON: I played terrible. I don't know what to say. I thought the golf course was in great shape. I played terrible, but the changes were fabulous. I didn't get a chance to see the changes last year. They took terrific. And there is no wind. There was a ton of birdies out there, and I didn't make have many of them. I just played terrible. There is no other way to say it.

Q. Phil, the approach on 9, your 18, did that kind of just sum up

PHIL MICKELSON: It did. I hit a perfect drive, and I kind of fatted a wedge. It was an awkward two days. I thought my game was sharper. I thought I had a good couple of practice sessions at home. This was a good barometer though. This starts my run into the U.S. Open. It tells me that I have a lot of work to do.

Q. As you go back and start that work, can you put your finger on anything, Phil?

PHIL MICKELSON: It was a little bit in each area. I didn't quite drive it very well. I didn't hit have many good iron shots. I struggled a little bit with a short game and the putter wasn't great and it lead too high numbers.

Q. Phil, you had a chance to be No. 1 with the win, did you over think that any? Do you think that was on your mind?

PHIL MICKELSON: That's not certainly that would be cool. I don't want to discount that. My thought process is getting ready for The Open, getting my game sharp for that, hitting the type of shots that I need to there. I thought I was closer. Obviously, I'm not, I've got a lot of work to do.

Q. Phil, you are disappointed for yourself, you know the people here, and the connections you have in the community with the people here in for Ft. Worth, the tournament's pink out this weekend, talk about that for a second.

PHIL MICKELSON: Well, the pink out is really something that's pretty cool. I am so flattered. I wish I was going to be here to partake in that. I will be wearing pink tomorrow in San Diego. Monday is Amy's birthday. It will give me a chance to spend the weekend with her to celebrate. I want to thank the membership, The TOUR wives, the membership here at Colonial, The TOUR wives, the tournament director and everybody here involved with this tournament for doing that for my family, but for all women who fight breast cancer. It's an emotional support that means a lot

Q. It's an emotional subject, Phil, can you talk about how important, this can only help?

PHIL MICKELSON: Last year it came at just the perfect time. It was a real low point for us, and to have that type of support really means a lot, and I hope that many of the hundreds of thousands of women that get diagnosed each year feel that support that a lot of people are behind them.

Q. How is Amy?

PHIL MICKELSON: She is doing well. Thank you.
