KAPALUA, Hawaii -- Call him Mr. Three. Lucas Glover never met a 3 he did not like and will be looking for more on Saturday. Glover had nine 3s on his second-round scorecard including a remarkable six 3s in a row at one point. Glover has also owned the par-5s this week. He is 8 under on the eight par-5s he has played in the first two rounds.
The weather in Maui has been in the low 80s with similar conditions forecasted this weekend, but it can be deceptive. Players and caddies have to remain hydrated and there were some problems. Kenny Perry ran out of energy and had to hydrate on Thursday night before playing better on Friday. Zach Johnson's caddie, Damon Green, had to leave the golf course in the middle of Friday's round because of dehydration. He will be back on the bag this weekend but it's a reminder how deceptively hot Hawaii can be.
With mild trade winds forecast for the weekend, the Plantation Course will be vulnerable again. The Ben Crenshaw-designed course was meant to play in the wind, and without the island breeze players are very secure in their club selections.
INSTRUCTOR'S CORNER: Todd Jones, head instructor at the TOUR Academy, will provide a daily tip this week to help improve your game.
The second round of the SBS Championship saw the Plantation Course defenseless, as the wind was almost non-existent. Every player in the field managed to shoot under par, with the leaderboard bunched up at the top. Give the best players in the world ideal scoring conditions, and they will go low.
Look for the third round to continue this trend. With the course playing fast, the players are seeing a lot of short wedge shots into the greens. They control their distance of these shots precisely by achieving a consistent impact position.
The telecasts' slow-motion video highlights how the players make ball contact first with the shaft leaning forward and the club head descending into the turf post-impact. To sharpen up your wedge play, try this TOUR Academy impact zone drill. Select a sand wedge and tee up the ball opposite the center of your stance. Place a second tee in the ground one inch forward of the ball. Proceed to strike shots using half swings, focusing on clipping the second tee out of the ground. It won't take long for you to look like a PGA TOUR player at impact.
