GREENSBORO, N.C. -- First, the focus was on John Mallinger. About 45 minutes later, Jeff Quinney was the bubble boy.

And finally, there was one. Scott Piercy was the only man who was able to play his way into the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup on Sunday as the 71st Wyndham Championship concluded.

Piercy claimed the last spot in The Barclays when he moved up 15 spots to No. 125 with his tie for eighth. That was his best finish of the season and couldn't have come at a better time as the Las Vegas native ovecame a string of three straight bogeys on the front nine to shoot 68.

"I accomplished my goal for the week and I got to go play well next week, too," Piercy said. "Big heart today. Lot of guts and big heart and just lucky to be there. It's been a long year and hopefully this kind of will turn it around."

Piercy edged Quinney by a mere two points. Interestingly, five players had to alter their travel plans each of the last two years, and three more during the first year of the Playoffs.

PGATOUR.COM takes a look at some of the movers -- in both directions -- below.

On the way up:
David Toms: The LSU man wasn't sure whether he'd even be making the trip to Boston for the Deutsche Bank Championship after starting the week No. 98 -- two above the cutoff for the second Playoffs event. But he's likely now assured of a spot in the first three after moving 54 spots up to No. 44 with his solo second, his first top-10 of the season. "I came here this week trying to have a great week, just to advance my position in the Playoffs," Toms said. "... So I had a great week, not quite tremendous week but I set myself up and be in a little better position to make a move in the Playoffs."
Michael Letzig: Letzig came to Greensboro as the man on the bubble at No. 125. He was steady all week, though, shooting four rounds in the 60s for the first time this season, including a 65 on Sunday, to move up seven spots. "The goal is to give myself another tournament to play," Letzig said. "Been a long year, very difficult year for me. ... If I can kind of roll with this momentum I can still make something out of this year."
Justin Leonard: The Texan was safely in for the first Playoffs event but was hardly a lock for the second. After Sunday's 39-point jump, though, he moved to 70th and has given himself a shot at the BMW Championship, too. "I don't think we ever feel very secure out here," Leonard said. "...You get to a level and there's the next level in front of you. ... It will be a quick trip home because I'll be headed up to New York tomorrow but it's a step in the right direction and I just want to keep this play going."
Moving in the wrong direction:
Chris Stroud: Turns out Stroud was the odd man out of the Playoffs. Even par was hardly enough to make the cut at Sedgefield as everyone went low, and Stroud sealed his fate with a second-round 76. He had started the week at No. 124 but the man on the bubble, Robert Garrigus, made the cut so he was assured of the points Stroud wasn't -- and so sorely needed.
Jeff Maggert: Maggert was another one who didn't play the weekend at Greensboro, and he's now in a precarious position. The Texan started the week at No. 91 but he dropped nine spots to 100th. So Maggert will head to New Jersey for The Barclays as the bubble boy for the second Playoffs event in Boston.
Jeff Quinney: He controlled his own destiny on Sunday, and he played the front nine in 31 to move to 14 under for the tournament. But Quinney, who started the week at No. 127, couldn't maintain the momentum on the back, making three bogeys in his first five holes and ending up No. 126. "I could have taken care of my own business today on the back nine," Quinney said after he finished. "...In the airport, either going West or North." Turns out he was heading West to his home in Scottsdale.
