Scott McCarron, for the second time in four years, is in position to play his way into the Playoffs.
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Scott McCarron has been there, done that.
The 45-year-old veteran came to the 2008 Wyndham Championship ranked 139th in the FedExCup. Back then, the top 144 made the field for the first event in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup but he was by no means safe.
McCarron went on to finish second at Sedgefield Country Club that year and jumped to 77th in the standings. He was safe for the first two Playoffs events and ended up finishing 91st overall.
This year, McCarron came to Greensboro ranked 142nd -- which is 17 spots shy of qualifying for The Barclays next week. But he's put himself in position with three rounds in the 60s this week.
McCarron enters the final round of the Wyndham Championship in a tie for second at 14 under. He fired a career-low 63 at Sedgefield on Saturday to tie with Scott Piercy and Lucas Glover, three strokes behind Arjun Atwal.
His projected FedExCup rank is now No. 89.
"Obviously, the Playoffs start next week but for me this is a playoff," said McCarron, who has never shot higher than 69 in 11 rounds at Sedgefield.
"I don't play well, then I'm going home. I'm coming out here and basically saying this is five playoffs for me, tournaments, so I got to play well tomorrow."
PGATOUR.COM takes a look at some of the movers -- in both directions -- below.
| On the way up: |
Richard S. Johnson: An eagle and four birdies over his first nine holes Saturday had thoughts of 59 swirling around. The diminutive Swede couldn't maintain the momentum but he still finished with a 65 and will start the final round in a tie for 11th, five shots off the lead. He moved up 15 spots in the FedExCup standings to No. 134 but will need a big finish to make his way into the top 125.
John Rollins: Rollins already was safely in The Barclays and the Deutsche Bank Championship at No. 79 in the standings entering the week. But he was projected at No. 62 -- which might mean a trip to Chicago -- after Saturday's 68 that left him four strokes behind Arjun Atwal. A win on Sunday, though, would get Rollins inside the all-important top 30.
Martin Laird: He's been among the big-gainers at the Wyndham Championship before. The Scotsman came to Greensboro ranked 164th in 2008 but moved up 36 spots with his fourth-place finish and into The Barclays. This year Laird started the week at 101st and he's now projected at 88th, a jump of 13 spots. |
| Moving in the wrong direction: |
Graham DeLaet: Delaet came into the Wyndham Championship ranked 119th in the FedExCup standings. But the rookie missed the cut with rounds of 67-74 and he's taken quite a tumble down the projected standings in the process. Now the bubble boy at No. 125, the Canadian will likely be checking the computer on Sunday just like Heath Slocum was a year ago.
Robert Garrigus: While he'd love to make the Playoffs, it's something of a win-win situation for Garrigus, whose wife is expecting their first child in a month. He's treading water right now after shooting 1 over on Saturday that left him in a tie for 74th among the 78 players who made the cut. He's fallen from 122nd to 127th in the process.
Chris Stroud: He opened with a respectable 68 but couldn't keep pace with a 76 in the second. Now that he's missed the cut, the 28-year-old Texan no longer controls his own destiny. After three rounds, he's fallen from 124th to No. 128 in the projections. |
