INSTRUCTOR'S CORNER: Ed Brill, head instructor at Tour Academy Hilton Head, analyzes the playing conditions this week:
Let's hope someone steps up and agrees to sponsor the current Verizon Heritage, after that long-time partnership ends after this year's tournament. As you've heard countless times on the broadcast, the players love the tournament and the golf course. The golf course is fantastic; you could play it every day and never get bored with it.
It is also a feather in the cap of Pete Dye that very little has been done to the course to keep up with the distance the ball is traveling these days. It is a similar course to another Dye masterpiece down the road in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., TPC Sawgrass. The latter has been lengthened marginally but has also stood the test of time. Courses don't have to be 7,500 yards to be a stern test.
Some statistics really show the importance of ball striking and short game:

Graham DeLaet, the driving distance leader, is tied for 51st.
These stats really show what is important in golf. You have to drive it well -- not real long -- but reasonably long and accurate. You have to putt it well.
Putting is approximately 30 percent of the game. No matter how good you hit it, you have to get it in the hole efficiently.
In the short game, 60 to 70 percent of your shots are going to come from 100 yards and in. If you're going to miss greens, you better be good with some sort of wedge.
Practice those three clubs and you're game will show improvement.
