INSTRUCTOR'S CORNER: Todd Jones, head instructor at TOUR Academy TPC Sawgrass, offers insight to playing the Stadium Course.
Round 2 of THE PLAYERS was a mirror image of Round 1, as TPC Sawgrass continued to yield low scores. Lee Westwood sits alone at the top of the leaderboard at 12 under par. He takes a one-shot lead into the weekend over Ryuji Imada and Francesco Molinari.
A big key to scoring so far has been to take advantage of the par-5s. For players at the top level of the game, these are holes that they are very aggressive on knowing that they need to make birdies to shoot low scores. For players looking to improve, these are holes to be managed as there are way too many bogeys and double bogeys made on these holes. When was the last time that you made eagle on a par-5, for that matter, a birdie? How about bogey or double? To shoot lower scores, you need to take advantage of the par-5s as well.
But for you, it is by making pars, so you need to get yourself in play off the tee. Look at these holes as position holes and choose a club off the tee that you know you can keep in play. You have selected the correct club if you can confidently say you can get it in play seven out of 10 times.
So the next time you walk to the tee on a par 5, think twice before pulling out the driver, use the 7 out of 10 rule and I guarantee that you start taking advantage of your scoring opportunities. -- Todd Jones
