WHERE TO PLAY
Bayonet and Black Horse: Gene Bates renovated both courses, opening up views?and playing corridors?of what had been tight, treelined holes. The changes have made the former military courses on the site of the former Fort Ord better than ever.

Carmel Valley Ranch: While Carmel can often by shrouded in fog, the sun is usually shining at this resort set with a recently refurbished Pete Dye set at the foot of the Santa Lucia Mountains. Similarly, the entire property will be unveiling a renovation in the summer of 2010.

Pacific Grove Golf Links: This muni located on the northern tip of the Monterey Peninsula features a series of holes in the heart of the back nine that can boast ocean views that are as spectacular as those of any course in the area.

HERE TO STAY
Bernardus Lodge: There are just 57 rooms with welcoming fireplaces, Italian linens and oversized bathtubs for two at this upscale retreat nestled among vineyards in Carmel Valley.

Highlands Inn: Unsurpassed service and comfortable accommodations match the ocean views at this cliffside hotel, which is a favorite among honeymooners, celebrities and nature lovers.

L'Auberge Carmel: Ideally located in the heart of Carmel village, this inn with European-style architecture and ambiance dates to 1929. A complete renovation several years ago gave all 20 rooms modern upgrades that complement the Old World surroundings.

WHERE TO EAT
Anton and Michel: One of the joys of Carmel is exploring the more than courtyards. In the Court of the Fountains, the hidden treasure is this romantic eatery showcasing continental cuisine like lobster and scallops fricassee.

Aubergine: This intimate 12-table restaurant at L'Auberge Carmel combines a 4,500-bottle wine cellar and a menu built on spontaneity and local ingredients, making for an unforgettable gastronomic journey.

Casanova: Diners may feel transported to small inn along the Mediterranean Sea at this quaint establishment, where the laughs and stories flow as freely as the wine accompanying the generous portions of homemade pasta dishes.
