Notes: Low Wargo, Couples holds Schwab Cup lead

Fred Couples has been on top of the Charles Schwab Cup standings for 12 out of 13 events played in 2010.

The Champions Tour takes a break for two weeks before returning for the Senior Open Championship at Carnoustie Golf Club in Scotland on July 19-25.

• Larry Mize won the inaugural Montreal Championship presented by Desjardins for his first Champions Tour victory, closing with an 8-under 64 on Sunday for a one-stroke victory over John Cook at Fontainebleau Golf Club. Mize, the 1987 Masters champion, made his 36th start on the Champions Tour and finished at 17-under 199.

• Mize's winning score of 17-under 199 gives the Champions Tour eight 54-hole events won with sub-200 totals this season.

• Tom Wargo became the first Champions Tour player this season to shoot better than his age. Wargo, at 67 years of age, shared the first-round lead with 2009 Rookie of the Year Russ Cochran after posting 65 in the Montreal Championship.

• 54,000 -- Number of spectators for the week at the Montreal Championship.

• Fred Couples has held the lead in the Charles Schwab Cup standings for 12 of 13 events played this season. The only week Couples has not held the lead in the standings was after the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai where he finished runner-up to Tom Watson.

• This is the 10th season of the Charles Schwab Cup, which recognizes the Champions Tour's leading player. Thecurrent top three on the Charles Schwab Cup points list are Fred Couples (1,433 points), Tom Lehman (1,134 points), and Nick Price (974 points).

• Nick Price is the Player of the Month for June. Price won the Principal Charity Classic (67-66-67) and tied for third at the Dick's Sporting Goods Open (69-66-68).

• The Triad Youth Golf Foundation recently announced the creation of the Mike Goodes Scholarship Fund, with the goal to raise $250,000 over the next five years to assist aspiring young golfers and promote junior golf in the Carolinas. Goodes, a native of Reidsville, NC and a local business owner, won the 2009 Allianz Championship for his first Champions Tour victory.

• Once the Senior British Open begins on July 19-25, the Champions Tour will play 13 tournaments in a 16 week period.

• Tom Pernice Jr. finished tied for 60th at the AT&T National on the PGA TOUR. Michael Allen missed the cut.

• Tony Jacklin celebrates his 66th birthday on Wednesday July 7. Jacklin's win in 1970 was the only victory at the U.S. Open by a European player in an 84-year span (1926-2009) before Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell ended that streak this year.

• Carl Mason won in Switzerland on the European Senior Tour over the weekend, but it is worth noting the performance of 74-year-old Sir Bob Charles, a 23-time winner on the Champions Tour. Charles broke his age in each of the three rounds with scores of 70, 73 and 68, a total of 211 to tie for 48th.

ON THIS DAY: July 9, 1977 -- In one of the great British Opens, Tom Watson wins his second Open Championship title, nipping Jack Nicklaus by one stroke at Turnberry. Watson shoots 65-65 on the weekend, while Nicklaus shoots 65-66. Third-place finisher Hubert Green finishes 11 strokes behind Watson and 10 behind Nicklaus.
