It's never ever too soon to start preparing for next year. This is the first of a series of special features over the final two months of the year designed to familiarize you with what will eventually be the PGA TOUR class of 2011. So, if you haven't already, please bookmark.

Keeper leagues were biting on a few of these Nationwide Tour graduates during the PGA TOUR's Playoffs for the FedExCup, if not sooner. For the second straight year, the youngest of the 25 led his peers in earnings, as Jamie Lovemark followed Michael Sim to the top. The average age (as of Jan. 1 of the following year) from a year ago took a significant plunge, dropping from 34.04 to 29.12. (In 2008, it was 30.16.) Fifteen from this year's crop are in their 20s.

A record 14 grads will be PGA TOUR rookies in 2011, including three thirtysomethings.

From the class of 2008, 10 finished inside the top 125 on the money list, while four eked out conditional status (126-150 range) before q school. With one event remaining in this year's Fall Series, eight from the class of 2009 are certain to return (including the top five), while two are currently hanging onto spots inside the top 150. Interestingly, none of the bottom nine are safe yet.

In the player capsules below, "2011 fantasy projection" refers to the money list. "Rob's Riff" includes my opinion, sometimes pointed, on where fantasy gamers need to position themselves accordingly. Remember, my goal is to put you in the position of making an intelligent decision with conviction, even if you disagree. The clarity will help with your direction and philosophy as a fantasy owner.

: 1
Age as of January 1, 2011: 22
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 120
2010 highlights: Playoff win in Mexico in June headlined seven top fives. Had exactly one top five in every month except February from January through August. Made 16 of 22 cuts overall. In addition to earnings, led the Nationwide Tour in sand saves.
PGA TOUR experience: Made nine of 17 cuts since 2006, five of which as an amateur. Lone top 25 is the playoff loss at the 2009 Frys.com Open, where his approach at the first extra hole famously bounced in and out of the greenside pond. He got up and down for par to stay alive, but lost on the next hole.
2011 fantasy projection: Top 125
Rob's Riff: Street favorite for Rookie of the Year. Youngest of the Nationwide Tour grads. Left the University of Southern California after three years despite strong intent after sophomore year to stay a full four. Failed to advance out of the second stage of Q School in 2009, forcing him to the developmental circuit this year. That he succeeded isn't a surprise, but he answered the bell in formidable fashion after the disappointment, which either speaks to his raw talent or his determination, but likely both. Still, while certainly tempted, don't overspend. Even though he's exempt from the reshuffle and has already earned a tee time at THE PLAYERS, rookie learning curves apply to everyone. Nevertheless, like last year's opinion on Michael Sim at this time, it's hard to imagine Lovemark ever competing in another Nationwide Tour event.

Picks for other formats

ONE-AND-DONE: Children's Miracle Network Classic. Rob's 2010 earnings: $5,859,787.42
DUFFER: Children's Miracle Network Classic. Rob's 2010 earnings: $786,666.14

: 2
Age as of January 1, 2011: 25
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 142
2010 highlights: Cashed 17 of 21 times including two victories, a playoff loss and one T2. Six top fives in all. Led the Nationwide Tour in the all-around ranking and scoring average. Ranked second in greens in regulation and ball-striking (ninth in total driving). Seventh in putting. Fourth in birdie average. Second in bogey avoidance. Only Nationwide Tour member that exceeded a 2:1 birdie-to-bogey ratio (2.04).
PGA TOUR experience: Cashed five of nine times since 2007, including a personal-best T15 at The McGladrey Classic in October.
2011 fantasy projection: Top 125
Rob's Riff: The Webb Simpson-lookalike has projected for this opportunity since his decorated college career at the University of Georgia, but it took three years on the Nationwide Tour to shatter his glass ceiling. Missed the final two events on the schedule due to a broken bone in his left thumb, but it shouldn't be an issue come January. He'll go too quickly in draft leagues and should be a popular play in salary formats, but I'm reserving judgment until he sniffs a leaderboard for the first time. I want to see if he can still be a Bulldog on the big stage.

Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 197
2010 highlights: Two victories. Five of six top fives occurred in final three months during which he collected over 87.5 percent of his season's haul. Ranked outside top 75 in distance off the tee, fairways hit, greens in regulation and ball-striking, yet placed ninth in scoring average thanks to a seventh-place finish in putting.
PGA TOUR experience: Member in 2001 and 2005. Has 24 paydays in 66 starts, with one top 10 (T10, 2005 BellSouth Classic).
2011 fantasy projection: 126-150
Rob's Riff: Giving him the benefit of the doubt on a number of fronts. He'll start high in the reshuffle, so he'll get early opportunities. One blistering-hot week with his putter early in the year would inflate his value for the entire season. And he's in his prime. However, he'll be a horse-for-course guy that could struggle to populate leaderboards in deeper fields. At worst, he trumps past champions on conditional status.

Age as of January 1, 2011: 35
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 232
2010 highlights: Bust-out year featured a pair of victories and five top fives in all. Ranked third in the all-around and birdie average. Also sixth in scoring average.
PGA TOUR experience: Rookie in 2008. Runner-up at the season-ending Children's Miracle Network Classic that year secured conditional status for 2009. It's his only top 25 of 14 paydays in 40 starts.
2011 fantasy projection: 126-150
Rob's Riff: With his cult following, his value will be skewed on draft day since there's going to be at least one owner that will buy the emotional connection. He was relatively consistent throughout the course of this season, and he'll start near the top of the reshuffle, so he's worth a last-round flier just for the sake of the starts, but I'm hedging conservatively. Gotta love his grit.

Age as of January 1, 2011: 27
Official World Golf Ranking(as of Nov. 1, 2010): 263
2010 highlights: Highest-ranked of seven in the graduating class without a victory in 2010. Seven top 10s, including three solo seconds. Led the Nationwide Tour in ball-striking. Second in the all-around. Fourth in scoring average and bogey avoidance. Fifth in scrambling.
PGA TOUR experience: In only career start, missed the cut at the 2010 U.S. Open.
2011 fantasy projection: 126-150
Rob's Riff: Rookies with virtually zero experience at the game's highest level are not for the faint of heart, but his starting position in the reshuffle has value, as does his lineage -- he's the nephew of three-time Champions Tour winner, Bruce Summerhays. Bona fide sleeper, but expect him to absorb a few blows to the competitive ego.

Steele

Brendan Steele
PGA TOUR rookie

Rank on Nationwide Tour money list: 6
Age as of January 1, 2011: 27
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 205
2010 highlights: Saved his best for last, with a gutty four-hole playoff victory over Colt Knost in the Nationwide Tour Championship to vault 24 spots on the money list. Cashed four of his five biggest paychecks in his last six starts, including the top three. Ranked second in total driving, sixth in ball-striking and seventh in the all-around.
PGA TOUR experience: none
2011 fantasy projection: 151+
Rob's Riff: A five-time winner while at the University of California-Riverside, he's had a modest career and he's a smart cookie, but there's nothing here that jumps off the page. Toiled in obscurity for two years on the Nationwide Tour until this season, which was largely aided by a well-timed sprint to the end. Just two of the last five Nationwide Tour Championship winners retained their fully-exempt status on the PGA TOUR the year after clinching their cards (David Branshaw, 119th on 2006 PGA TOUR money list; Matt Bettencourt, 111th in 2009).

Vegas

Jhonattan Vegas
PGA TOUR rookie

Rank on Nationwide Tour money list: 7
Age as of January 1, 2011: 26
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 171
2010 highlights: Four top fives, including first career victory. Ranked third in distance off the tee and birdies or better on par 5s. First Venezuelan to earn a PGA TOUR card.
PGA TOUR experience: Two paydays in three starts going back to 2003, including a T24 at the Puerto Rico Open in March of this year.
2011 fantasy projection: 151+
Rob's Riff: Total wildcard. He's an inspiring story for sure, but he also has minimal experience on the PGA TOUR. Course management should be at the top of Vegas' priorities. When his timing is on, he can utilize his 6-foot-2, 230-pound frame to muscle over a track or two. Should be a lot of fun to watch and follow, but I'll take a handful of veteran ball-strikers before I roll the dice here.

piller-martin.jpg
Piller

Martin Piller
PGA TOUR rookie

Rank on Nationwide Tour money list: 8
Age as of January 1, 2011: 25
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 268
2010 highlights: Lowest-ranked of four two-time winners here. Finished second on the Nationwide Tour in putting.
PGA TOUR experience: One start: T40 at the 2009 Valero Texas Open.
2011 fantasy projection: 151+
Rob's Riff: Statistically, the worst ball-striker of this class (133rd of 138). Didn't crack a top 35 in final eight starts after winning on Aug. 1. Texas A&M teammate, Bobby Gates, also graduated.

Chappell-Kevin.jpg
Chappell

Kevin Chappell
PGA TOUR rookie
Rank on Nationwide Tour money list
: 9
Age as of January 1, 2011: 24
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 186
2010 highlights: Recorded five top fives, including one win. Led the Nationwide Tour in total driving, birdies or better on par 5s and total eagles. Also third in birdies or better on par 4s, fifth in birdie average and ninth in the all-around.
PGA TOUR experience: Two paydays in seven starts -- T6 at the 2009 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am; T24 at the 2010 Frys.com Open.
2011 fantasy projection: Top 125
Rob's Riff: His timing is about right. Anyone that even casually follows golf at the collegiate level knows about this guy. He's the only NCAA individual champion (2008) in UCLA history. I love that the California native is benefited by a start on the West Coast. The only problem, however, is that there's no chance that he'll sneak through to the nether regions of your draft. Moreover, because he's a rookie, be advised to invest sparingly.

ridings-tag.jpg
Ridings

Tag Ridings
Rank on Nationwide Tour money
list: 10
Age as of January 1, 2011: 36
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 258
2010 highlights: His nine top 10s shared the Nationwide Tour lead (Jamie Lovemark). He had a total of 17 top 25s. His 71 sub-par rounds led the Tour, and was eight more than runner-up, Daniel Summerhays.
PGA TOUR experience: Has cashed in 78 of 153 starts going back to 2000 U.S. Open, including 11 top 10s. Rookie year was 2003. Maintained at least partial status through 2009.
2011 fantasy projection: 126-150
Rob's Riff: If golf had a quadruple-A level, Tag would tear it up. He's carved out a comfortable career niche as a tweener. His iron game on the Nationwide Tour has yet to translate to the big time, so that's reason to balk on draft day, but he's a cool customer that's been around the block several times. Of course, that's another way of saying that you already know what you get here.

kisner-kevin.jpg
Kisner

Kevin Kisner
PGA TOUR rookie
Rank on Nationwide Tour money list:
11
Age as of January 1, 2011: 26
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 239
2010 highlights: Beginning with his one win on Labor Day weekend, he totaled nearly 69 percent of his season's earnings in four paydays over his last eight starts. Had six top 10s overall, but just two down the stretch.
PGA TOUR experience: none
2011 fantasy projection: Top 125
Rob's Riff: Here's your predominant sleeper of the bunch. The only four-time All-American ever at the University of Georgia, he missed out on earning his PGA TOUR card at q-school last year by one stroke, but that gave us the opportunity to observe what he can do in a full season on the Nationwide Tour. There's nothing big about his game, but it improves as he nears the hole, evidenced by ranking eighth in scrambling and 22nd in putting, and that's fantasy gold. Once Lovemark, Kirk and Chappell are gone, you can sit on Kisner as long as you want.

gomez-fabien.jpg
Gomez

Fabian Gomez
PGA TOUR rookie
Rank on Nationwide Tour money list
: 12
Age as of January 1, 2011: 32
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 254
2010 highlights: Five top 10s in 26 starts, including his first Nationwide Tour victory in March. Missed just four cuts. Third on Tour in scrambling; 12th in putting.
PGA TOUR experience: none
2011 fantasy projection: 151+
Rob's Riff: Will join fellow Argentines Angel Cabrera and Andres Romero on the PGA TOUR. (For the record, Jose Coceres also has status via a medical extension, but he hasn't played since May 2009.) Gomez is a late bloomer that played mini-tours until cracking the Nationwide Tour in 2007. Entering his prime but doesn't carry the kind of pedigree that has me jumping up and down. A calculated pass on draft day.

mathis-david.jpg
Mathis

David Mathis
Rank on Nationwide Tour money list
: 13
Age as of January 1, 2011: 36
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 278
2010 highlights: Victory at the inaugural Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open in late October secured his PGA TOUR card. Six top 10s in 23 starts. Led the Tour in bogey avoidance. Fourth in putting and birdies or better on par 3s. Also ninth in scrambling.
PGA TOUR experience: In rookie year of 2009, finished 160th on the money list. First qualified for an event in 1997. Zero top 15s in 32 career starts.
2011 fantasy projection: 151+
Rob's Riff: His second go-around should yield better results, but do you want to be the owner that invests in the oldest Nationwide Tour grad? (Mathis has Ridings beat by six and a half months.) A year ago, eight of the top 25 were 37 or older at this time. With one event remaining, of that group, only Tom Gillis (now 42), also a former PGA TOUR member, is assured of retaining his full-exempt status for 2011.

bradley-keegan.jpg
Bradley

Keegan Bradley
PGA TOUR rookie
Rank on Nationwide Tour money list
: 14
Age as of January 1, 2011: 24
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 337
2010 highlights: Five top-five finishes, including four straight from mid-September through mid-October. Seventh in distance off the tee, 16th in greens hit.
PGA TOUR experience: none
2011 fantasy projection: 151+
Rob's Riff: Whenever you tuned into televised Nationwide Tour coverage, there was a pretty good chance that you were updated on the latest motivational speech from his aunt, LPGA Hall of Famer, Pat Bradley. It's impossible to quantify the impact of that relationship, but Keegan's short game is cause for alarm. He ranked 106th in scrambling, 132nd in sand saves and 55th in putting. He has the makings of hitting the right combination in one or two weeks, but with no experience yet, it's anyone's guess when that might be. One positive that you can glean from his torrid late-season run is that he may rattle off a couple of strong finishes in consecutive weeks in 2011.

knost-colt.jpg
Knost

Colt Knost
Rank on Nationwide Tour money list: 15
Age as of January 1, 2011: 25
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 331
2010 highlights: Four top fives, including a playoff loss at the Nationwide Tour Championship, which propelled him into the top 25 in earnings (from 36th). Ranked 10th in fairways and seventh in greens. Also fourth in birdies or better on par 3s.
PGA TOUR experience: Rookie member in 2009, finishing 193rd on the money list. Has made 15 of 34 cuts dating back to 2007, the year he won the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Amateur Public Links. Has one top 25 (T25, 2009 Bob Hope Classic). Was one of six co-leaders after 54 holes at the Shell Houston Open before exploding for a final-round 81 to finish T42.
2011 fantasy projection: Top 125
Rob's Riff: While grinding out his bogey-free 68 on Sunday at Daniel Island, he looked like a completely different cat than the one we witnessed all of 2009. And talk about putting it all together at the right time, he ranked first in fairways, second in greens hit and second in putting. He also co-led the field in birdies at the finale. He won't overpower anyone, but the new and improved version could make some noise on the cozier courses on the PGA TOUR.

Rank on Nationwide Tour money list: 16
Age as of January 1, 2011: 25
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 275
2010 highlights: Won the first tournament on the schedule in New Zealand, and then chased it with a solo third the following week in Australia. Notched two more top 10s later on. Ranked 13th in distance off the tee, 11th in birdie average and ninth in birdies or better on par 5s.
PGA TOUR experience: Two paydays in three starts (going back to the 2009 Valero Texas Open), including a T40 at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach in June.
2011 fantasy projection: 151+
Rob's Riff: He was the rabbit with his 1st-3rd start, but it took him five months thereafter to bank the necessary coin to sneak inside what would eventually be the number to qualify for the top 25. No top 10s in his final 12 starts. I wouldn't mind seeing how he handles Sunday afternoon pressure before committing to the projection. Joins fellow Texas A&M Aggie, Martin Piller, in the 2011 PGA TOUR rookie class.

Age as of January 1, 2011: 27
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 381
2010 highlights: Won the lucrative Soboba Golf Classic, where his $180,000 payday was worth nearly 70 percent of his season's total. Three top 15s on the year. Led the Nationwide Tour in putting, birdie average and birdies-or-better conversion percentage. Fifth in distance off the tee.
PGA TOUR experience: Rookie year was 2006; finished 256th in earnings. Has cashed in three of 29 starts.
2011 fantasy projection: 151+
Rob's Riff: Yes, he ranked first in putting, but that was primarily due to the fact that he was 128th in greens in regulation, worst among his graduating class. (At least he's on the positive end of that inverse relationship. Think Brandt Snedeker.) He's the only Aussie to crack the top 25 (Scott Gardiner, was bumped four spots to 26th at the Nationwide Tour Championship).

Age as of January 1, 2011: 34
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 359
2010 highlights: Four top 10s, including a victory in July (his second career on the Nationwide Tour), where he closed with a bogey-free 64.
PGA TOUR experience: Member in 2004, 2005 and 2007, finishing outside the top 150 every time. Cashed 35 of 76 starts, with no top 10s.
2011 fantasy projection: 151+
Rob's Riff: The two-time q-school grad, and now two-time Nationwide Tour alum makes his money on and around the greens, where he ranked 18th in scrambling, 35th in sand saves and 30th in putting. However, his win came at the fourth-richest event on the circuit (over 58 percent of his overall earnings), distorting his value. A nice talent and in his prime, but leave him on the board.

PGA TOUR experience: One start: T47 at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach in June.
2011 fantasy projection: 151+
Rob's Riff: Ranked 108th in putting, worst among his graduating class. 'Nuff said.

Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 312
2010 highlights: Cashed 15 of 26 times, including a pair of T2s. Seven top 10s in all. Ranked 19th in distance off the tee and greens hit, 22nd in putting, 12th in scoring average and sixth in the all-around.
PGA TOUR experience: Rookie year of 2005. Also maintained status in 2006, 2007 and 2009. First-ever start was at the 2004 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am (T69). Overall, he's 40-for-88 with two top 10s.
2011 fantasy projection: 126-150
Rob's Riff: We've seen this song and dance in the past, with meager results. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt given that he's in his prime, but he'll need a hot start to retain this projection.

hearn-david.jpg
Hearn

David Hearn
Rank on Nationwide Tour money list
: 21
Age as of January 1, 2011: 31
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 319
2010 highlights: Four top fives, including a pair of fourth-place finishes in the final three weeks. Rose six spots from 27th following the Nationwide Tour Championship. Led the Tour in scrambling, ranked seventh in fairways hit and 12th in the all-around.
PGA TOUR experience: Member in 2005, finishing 196th on the money list. Made debut in 2002. Overall, has cashed in 13 of 33 starts with no top 10s.
2011 fantasy projection: 151+
Rob's Riff: His only glaring weakness, if you want to call it that, is that he's not terribly long off the tee, but he's long enough. Technically, he's Canada's fourth-best golfer, but given the injuries to Stephen Ames (103rd in the world ranking) and Mike Weir (139th), Graham DeLaet (182nd) is the leader in the clubhouse over Hearn. So, if you only draft Canadians, then Hearn goes off the board in the first round. Otherwise, abstain, but keep an eye on him. He's at an age during which he could sneak up on us.

Joe Affrunti

Rank on Nationwide Tour money list: 22
Age as of January 1, 2011: 29
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 294
2010 highlights: Recorded all four of his top 10s in the back half of the year. Solo third at the Nationwide Tour Championship moved him up 12 slots on the money list. Two runner-up finishes, including a playoff loss at the Chattanooga Classic. Led the Tour in birdies or better on par 3s.
PGA TOUR experience: Has failed to cash in six starts dating back to 2004, all of which have occurred in Wisconsin or his native Illinois.
2011 fantasy projection: 151+
Rob's Riff: Being a Chicagoland native myself, I hate to project negative, but he's yet to showcase any game on the PGA TOUR in his opportunities, albeit limited. Moreover, unless he decides to try and improve his number at q school, he's already behind the eight ball in terms of the pecking order. Best chance to impress might be in Puerto Rico.

Tomasulo

Peter Tomasulo
Rank on Nationwide Tour money list
: 23
Age as of January 1, 2011: 29
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 394
2010 highlights: His win in July came at the third-richest event on the schedule and accounted for over 64 percent of his total earnings. Played the Nationwide Tour Championship with a sandal and a cane due to a broken right foot, finishing 58th. Ranked 15th in the all-around.
PGA TOUR experience: Finished 201st in earnings as a rookie in 2009. Overall, he's cashed seven of 29 times dating back to 2005. No top 15s.
2011 fantasy projection: 151+
Rob's Riff: Just like with Kirk's thumb, Tomasulo's injured foot doesn't concern me. However, he had just two top 10s this year, and they came in consecutive weeks, and that does bother me. Thirteen of his 20 starts resulted in missed cuts (five) or paydays outside the top 40 (eight). I suspect that he'll benefit from a second year of making the stops, but he'll need an early jolt to climb in the reshuffle. Unfortunately, he hasn't exhibited the propensity to find superb form overnight like some can.

Michael Putnam
Rank on Nationwide Tour money list
: 24
Age as of January 1, 2011: 27
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 347
2010 highlights: Victory in September occurred during a Tour-best stretch of 12 consecutive cuts made. Posted two other top fives earlier in the season. Ranked eighth in birdie average and fourth in the all-around.
PGA TOUR experience: In rookie year of 2007, finished 158th in earnings. Overall, he's cashed in 22 of 35 starts dating back to 2005, with one top 10 (T4, 2005 Buick Championship).
2011 fantasy projection: Top 125
Rob's Riff: Grinded his way to $422,000 three years ago, as 17 of his 19 paydays were as a result of finishes outside the top 25. That's cheap labor in some fantasy formats. This year, his scoring average before the cut ranked fourth-lowest on the Nationwide Tour. Even if he doesn't improve his number at q school, I'm bullish on the big guy. He's a West Coaster that gets to start the year in his comfort zone. He opened 2007 with eight consecutive cuts made. Small risk, potentially above-average reward here.

PGA TOUR rookie

Rank on Nationwide Tour money list: 25
Age as of January 1, 2011: 36
Official World Golf Ranking (as of Nov. 1, 2010): 443
2010 highlights: Two top 10s, including a victory in May. Ended the season cashing in his last eight starts. Ranked fourth in greens in regulation and fifth in ball-striking.
PGA TOUR experience: Cashed once in three starts dating back to 2001 (T74, 2008 U.S. Open).
2011 fantasy projection: 151+
Rob's Riff: You might remember his footnote at the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, where he was a co-leader after 18 holes. You might also remember the story of him being confused with Justin B. Hicks, a golf teacher in the San Diego area that missed the cut at the Buick Invitational earlier that year. Even if you don't, and even if you still can't tell the two apart, don't sweat it. This Hicks (Justin D.) is the oldest rookie of the graduates. Even if he improves his number at q school, he should be left untouched.
