PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- The 2010 PGA TOUR season was like none other in recent years. No longer was Tiger Woods the dominant figure, opening the door for others to step up and fill the void.
And step up they did.
From Phil Mickelson's memorable victory at the Masters Tournament while dealing with the emotional weight of wife Amy and his mother battling breast cancer, to the emergence of an international crop of 20-somethings claiming 14 victories, to the memorable 59s posted by veterans Paul Goydos and Stuart Appleby, 2010 certainly was a year to remember.
A New Dawn: The Story of the 2010 PGA TOUR Season, a one-hour NBC Sports special airing at 3 p.m. ET on Sat., Nov. 6, captures these and other stories that made the year so unique and entertaining.
Certainly the most inspirational win came in April when Mickelson took home his third Green Jacket at the Masters. Not only did it mark the culmination of a year that saw Amy and his mother both battling breast cancer, it marked the first time Amy was able to watch Phil play in person since undergoing cancer treatments, leading to a memorable, emotional embrace upon his completion of play.
Goydos at the John Deere Classic and Appleby at the inaugural Greenbrier Classic recorded the fourth and fifth 59s in PGA TOUR history during a four-week summer span, while the youth movement took hold early and continued throughout the season. Eleven players in their 20s, representing seven countries, captured victories.
Dustin Johnson became a focal point of this movement, not because of his two wins, but his two close calls in major championships. First there was the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, when he led through three rounds before faltering early in the final round. Then there was the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, when Johnson was in contention until a controversial penalty on the final hole cost him a chance at a playoff.
Although not in his 20s, but still emerging as a younger talent and certainly unique character, long-hitting Bubba Watson captured an emotional victory of his own at the Travelers Championship. Despite family struggles with his ailing father, Watson proved over and over that his perspective on golf and life is truly one of a kind.
And then there was Jim Furyk's memorable victory at THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola -- his third of the season -- to secure the FedExCup and position him as a front-runner for Player of the Year honors.
