Palmer in the mid 1960s
How popular had Arnold Palmer become by the mid 1960s? Palmer, seen here with Bob Hope, appeared as himself in the 1963 Hope film "Call Me Bwana." In the 1964 James Bond film, "Goldfinger," a caddie suggests that the movie's villain is cheating by telling Sean Connery (Bond), "If that's his original ball, I'm Arnold Palmer." And, to top it off, former President Dwight D. Eisenhower flew to Latrobe and surprised Palmer by knocking on his door for a birthday visit on Sept. 10, 1966.
He was still winning frequently on the PGA TOUR - he won 39 times between 1960-67 - but Palmer experienced his fair share of heartache as well. He made the turn with a seven-stroke lead at the 1966 U.S. Open only to shoot a 4-over 39 on the back nine while Billy Casper fired a 32. Palmer lost to Casper in a playoff the following day at Olympic Country Club. It was one of Palmer's 10 runner-up finishes in major championships.
