SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Last month Rich Beem initiated what would become the "Beem Fore Behm" project, an effort to aid the family of Dallas Cowboys scouting assistant Rich Behm, who was severely injured in the collapse of the team practice facility.
"It ended up being much more than I envisioned," said Beem whose original idea was to auction the clubs he would use at the HP Byron Nelson Championship and the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Quickly, though, the PGA TOUR, both tournaments, the Cowboys, Callaway Golf and scores of donors joined the effort. Beem contributed $100 for each birdie he made in the two weeks.
Donations received at the events and online amounted to $10,321. In addition, donors guessed the total number of birdies made each week; those closest to the actual total received a bag and a set of custom-fit Callaway clubs. At the Nelson, where 1,670 birdies were made, Scott Pendery of Waxahachie, Texas, came closest with a guess of 1,500. At the Crowne Plaza 1,412 birdies were made and Kevin McKenna of Corinth, Texas, won with an estimate of 1,410.
"I'm sure the money will help the Behm family," said Beem, "but more than that I hope Rich knows there are a lot of people out there pulling for him to make a good recovery so he and his family are able to enjoy their life together. I thank all the groups that helped make this a success, especially the fans."
