| Sleepers: Accenture Match Play ChampionshipFeb. 19, 2008 Expert Picks: Who may win? | Get in the discussion: Give us your picks T.J. Auclair PGATOUR.com Interactive Producer Pick: David Toms Hard for me to believe, but based on our "expert guidelines," Toms qualifies as a sleeper pick and I'm taking him. He is awesome in match play. Aside from winning the Accenture Match Play Championship in 2005, Toms was a stud for the American side at the Presidents Cup, where he collected a tournament-best 4 ½ points. This is the same guy that stared down Phil Mickelson to win the PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club in 2001 and narrowly came up on the wrong end of a 2 and 1 decision to Tiger at the 2003 Accenture Match Play Championship. Look out for Toms -- this David is a Goliath in match play. Lauren Deason PGATOUR.com Editorial Coordinator Pick: David Toms I was hesitant to pick Toms as a "sleeper" since it wouldn't be a huge surprise if he won given his past champion status at this event. But he fits our criteria so I'm going with Toms, who tied for 22nd in the Northern Trust Open last week. In eight appearances at the event, he has six top-10s, including a win in 2005 and a runner-up finish in 2003. The experienced Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup player also did not lose once at The Presidents Cup in 2007. Melanie Hauser PGATOUR.com Correspondent Pick: David Toms One win and four top-10 finishes in this event in five tries. Hmmm. Tied for 22nd last week after a disappointing season opener. Dave Lagarde PGATOUR.com Correspondent Pick: David Toms Has slipped to 50th in the world, yet this is a format in which Toms, a former champion, has thrived. Game showed some life at Riviera and should he hone in with his irons, he's capable of making a run. John Maginnes PGATOUR.com Contributor Pick: Angel Cabrera I narrowed my dark horses down to Boo Weekley and Angel Cabrera. Because the Snead bracket looks a little more friendly I opted for the reigning U.S. Open champ. The Gallery at Dove Mountain favors the long ball with two drivable par-4s and three reachable par-5s. Look for "the Duck" to play well and run through some players this week at the Accenture Match Play Championship. Win McMurray Host, PGA TOUR Today Pick: Camilo Villegas He's up against K.J. in the first round, but I think the smooth talking Colombian will fair well in the desert setting, just down the road from where he finished second at the 2006 FBR Open. It's a first for him at the World Golf Championships, but Spiderman will be making the most of it. He's not scared to step up when he needs to make it count. In late September, he rolled a 20-footer for birdie on the second playoff hole to defeat Toyokazu Fujishima at the Coca-Cola Tokai Classic in Japan for his first title. Scott Pianowski The Fantasy Insider Pick: Jonathan Byrd In a college hoops pool, you'd never dream of taking a No. 16 seed, but the underdogs have far more bite in this event. Byrd's got a decent chance to take down Retief Goosen -- who's game looked pretty sloppy in Los Angeles -- and the next few matches look reasonable enough if the first domino falls. Byrd is one of the best putters around, a major mental edge in this format. Helen Ross PGATOUR.com Chief of Correspondents Pick: Stuart Appleby Stuart Appleby has played in all nine previous Accenture Match Play Championships with limited success. Only once has he advanced past the second round, and his overall record is 4-9. I like the way he's playing right now, though, with three straight top-10s, including a tie for seventh last week at the Northern Trust Open. Maybe this will be the year Appleby breaks out. Dave Shedloski PGATOUR.com Senior Correspondent Pick: David Toms Going back to the well with the smooth-swinging Louisiana native one more time, because his record in the WGC-Accenture Match Play is exceptional (including the '05 title) and because we think he still is in the process of finding his stride. Toms is one of the game's best overall putters, not just in putts converted, but also in three-putt avoidance. John Swantek PGA TOUR Productions Fantasy Insider Pick: Martin Kaymer The talented 23 year old German -- the European Tour Rookie of the Year in 2007 - began 2008 with a win at the Abu Dhabi Championship and followed it up with a runner-up to Tiger Woods at the Dubai Desert Classic. Ranked 21st in the world, he's no stranger to Euro Tour followers, but relatively obscure in the States. In other words, the perfect candidate to make a deep run this week.
