TOURNAMENT RECAP: Scotsman Sandy Lyle became the first non-U.S. player to win THE PLAYERS Championship when he defeated Jeff Sluman in a playoff. The opening round was bizarre with Raymond Floyd hitting his ball into his own golf bag, and both he and Seve Ballesteros incurring penalties for going out of bounds. After Lyle and Sluman had finished with 274 totals, Sluman had a chance for a birdie, and victory, on the second extra hole -- the 17th -- but missed after a spectator jumped in the lake and distracted him. Lyle won with par on the 18th.
