Sweden takes lead at women's amateur golf event

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) -- The U.S. team tied for 17th Wednesday after the first round of the Espirito Santo women's amateur team golf tournament.

Tiffany Joh led the USA with a 1-over 74, Alison Walshe shot 78 and Amanda Blumenherst 79 for a 6-over 152 total.

Caroline Hedwall shot 67 to help give Sweden a record eight-stroke lead at 9-under 137. Teammates Anna Nordqvist shot 70 and Pernilla Lindberg 72.

Spain was second at 145 and Japan finished another stroke back.

The event, held every two years, has previously been dominated by the United States, which has won 13 times.
