Fran Pruitt, the wife of Dillard Pruitt, a PGA TOUR rules official and former player, died Friday after a long battle with cystic fibrosis.

Her loss is felt throughout the golf community but particularly affects two other TOUR families. Scott Verplank's wife, Kim, is Fran Pruitt's sister while Jay Haas' wife, Jan, is Dillard Pruitt's sister.

Verplank is playing in the 137th Open Championship. He learned of the death of his sister-in-law after he finished his second round.

"We were deeply saddened to learn of Fran Pruitt's passing earlier today," PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem said. "Fran and Dillard have been a part of the PGA TOUR family for more than 20 years, first during Dillard's competitive days and more recently as a member of the TOUR rules staff.

"We extend our condolences and prayers to Dillard and his family on their loss."
