Deutsche Bank Championship: Third-Round Notebook

Sep. 2, 2007

NORTON, Mass. -- Brett Wetterich's third-round 66 Sunday in the Deutsche Bank Championship seems to have the 2006 EDS Byron Nelson Championship winner back on track after missing five of his last eight cuts, a streak that saw him record only two rounds in the 60s.

HOW TOP 5 IN FEDEXCUP
POINTS STAND THRU 54 HOLES
Player Score Status
1. Steve Stricker -8 T8
2. K. J. Choi WD WD
3. Rory Sabbatini -8 T8
4. Tiger Woods -10 T4
5. Phil Mickelson -11 T4

• This marks the second 54-hole lead/co-lead of Wetterich's PGA TOUR career. He was tied for the lead with Geoff Ogilvy at the 2005 Honda Classic, and tied for sixth.

• Eleven third-round leaders/co-leaders have gone on to win in 2007, including three of the last five winners (Steve Flesch at the Reno-Tahoe Open; Tiger Woods at the PGA Championship; Steve Stricker at The Barclays).

• Wetterich finds himself in a familiar situation for 54-hole leaders this year. There has not been a tie atop the leaderboard through 54 holes of a PGA TOUR event since the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial in May (Scott Verplank, Rory Sabbatini, Jim Furyk, Bernhard Langer).

• After beginning his 2007 PGA TOUR campaign with eight missed cuts and one withdrawal in his first 14 tournaments, Jason Gore has righted the ship by making nine straight cuts (not including a withdrawal due to injury at the Canadian Open) and is continuing the momentum after a third-round 64 on Sunday.

Angel Cabrera's round of 65 on Sunday has him in position to advance to next week's BMW Championship in the Playoffs for the FedExCup. Cabrera (44th in points) was the only major championship winner this year who was not certain to advance at the start of week.

• Steve Stricker's round of 69 should have come as a surprise to no one as the FedExCup points leader leads the PGA TOUR in Round Three Scoring Average this year (68.67 after The Barclays).

• Tiger Woods' Sunday round of 67 ends a rather unusual streak as the world No. 1 had fired rounds of 69 in the third round of his last five tournaments, dating back to the U.S. Open.

• 2007 Masters champion Zach Johnson (68/-5) was the only player in the field on Sunday to hit 14 of 14 fairways off the tee.

• The third-round scoring average of 69.973 is the lowest single-round scoring average in tournament history. The previous low came during the second round of the 2005 Deutsche Bank Championship (70.413).

• Players ranked 1-40 on the inaugural FedExCup points list at the start of the week have already guaranteed their spot in next week's BMW Championship. Players from 41 to 64 at the start of the week are considered "probable" to make it to Chicago.
