Honda Classic: Third-Round Notebook PGA TOUR Staff PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- After three rounds of The Honda Classic, this marks the first time in Mark Wilson's PGA TOUR career that he has led or held a share of the third-round lead. The only other time Wilson has held or shared the lead after the completion of a round was following the first round of the Chrysler Classic of Tucson last year. ![]() Despite thinking the course didn't set up well for him, Boo Weekley is having a great week. Boo Weekley, who posted his first career top-10 last week at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, sits second through 54 holes -- his best standing after the third round in his PGA TOUR career. Leader Mark Wilson and second-place Boo Weekley shot matching 66s, each setting the low round of the day. With a top-10 finish, Mark Wilson can guarantee himself a spot in next week's PODS Championship in Tampa. Wilson is currently the first alternate. Wilson's best finish on TOUR is a T3 at the 2005 Valero Texas Open. Mark Wilson's score of 6 under par is the highest score in relation to par to lead a tournament this year after three rounds by five strokes. The previous mark of 11 under par was set by Vijay Singh at the Mercedes-Benz Championships and by co-leaders at the Buick Invitational Andrew Buckle and Brandt Snedeker. Wilson finished T29 at the PGA TOUR Qualifying School, the final position to gain a PGA TOUR card for 2007. Four players in the top five after Saturday's round are alumni of the Nationwide Tour. If Mark Wilson (1), Boo Weekley (2), Daniel Chopra (3) or Charlie Wi (T4) come through with a victory on Sunday, it will mark the 200th PGA TOUR victory for a Nationwide Tour alum. Nationwide Tour Alumni to win on the PGA TOUR in 2007 are Paul Goydos (Sony Open in Hawaii), Charley Hoffman (Bob Hope Chrysler Classic) and Aaron Baddeley (FBR Open). Twelve players are under par after the third round.
The Comeback Player of the Year on the PGA TOUR in 2006, Steve Stricker finished the day at 3 under par for the tournament, three strokes off the lead. Stricker enjoyed success in 2006 after starting the year with only past champion status. Highlights include seven top-10 finishes including T-2 at the Booz Allen Classic and T-6 at the U.S. Open, where he led after two rounds. Robert Allenby has taken advantage of the front nine this week, playing the opening holes at 6 under par. The back nine has not been as favorable to Allenby, who is 4 over on the final nine holes. For the week, the back nine is playing nearly one stroke tougher than the front. For the week, the front nine scoring average is 35.670, while the back nine average is 36.384. Arron Oberhoser and J.J. Henry recorded the first bogey-free rounds of the tournament on Saturday. Copyright 2007 PGATOUR.com. All rights reserved. |
