Could victory drought end at Riviera?

Oct. 15, 2007

As the PGA TOUR heads to Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles next week for the 2007 Nissan Open, a number of players who have been playing well will be looking to end a victory drought.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Most top-10s since last win
Rank Player Top-10s
1 Robert Allenby 31
Chris DiMarco 31
Billy Mayfair 31
4 Scott Verplank 30
5 Jerry Kelly 29

PGATOUR.com took a look at the current active full-time players on TOUR and determined who had the most top-10 finishes since his last victory. The thinking here is that these players have continued to play well, they just haven't been fortunate enough to win recently. However, if you are finishing in the top-10 frequently, you'll eventually finish on top.

The leaders in this category are Robert Allenby, Chris DiMarco and Billy Mayfair. Each of them has recorded 31 top-10 finishes since last winning.

For Allenby, his last win came at the 2001 Marconi Pennsylvania Classic. DiMarco last won at the 2002 FBR Open and Mayfair recorded his last win at the 1998 Buick Open.

Just behind that trio are Scott Verplank, who has 30 top-10s since his victory at the 2001 Canadian Open and Jerry Kelly, who has 29 top-10 efforts since winning what is now known as the BMW Championship in 2002.

The Nissan Open field will include Allenby, DiMarco, Mayfair and Verplank. In fact, Allenby and Mayfair are both past champions of the Los Angeles event and rank 13th and 36th, respectively, on this year's FedExCup points list. Might this be the breakthrough week for one of these players?
