Nov. 5, 2007The PGA TOUR has featured events contested at 55 different courses in 2007. Here are the toughest courses on TOUR in 2007, with relevant facts and figures:

Angel Cabrera
1. The U.S. Open: Oakmont Country Club (7,257 Yards, Par 70)
Average Score: 75.705 | Results
Average strokes over par: 5.705
Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 10
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 18, 484-yard par-4/4.602
Summary: The devlish par-3 eighth at Oakmont -- all 288 yards of it -- didn't even rank among the four toughest holes during the 107th U.S. Open. That honor went to a quartet of par fours, all of which measured over 460 yards. The 18th at Oakmont gave up an incredible 15 triple bogeys on the week. Two of the easier holes were the shorter par fours on the back side. Even so, no hole on the course averaged under par.

2. The Masters: Augusta National Golf Club (7,445 Yards, Par 72)
Average Score: 75.881| Results
Average strokes over par: 3.881
Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 9
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 11, 505-yard par-4/4.510
Summary: A staggering half of Augusta National's 18 holes are among the hardest on TOUR in 2007. The bunker-laden first hole played almost as difficult as the 11th hole, averaging 4.474 strokes per round. The only holes at Augusta National to play under par were the four par-fives, which each gave up over 80 birdies. The easiest hole was the long par-5 eighth, which played to a 4.766 average. Not surprisingly, the short par-3 12th gave up more double bogeys (30) than any other hole.

Average strokes over par: 3.016
Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 3
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 18, 465-yard par-4/4.429
Summary: Southern Hills proved to be a fair test. The win was Tiger Woods' second in a row and just his second major won on a par-70 course. The front side at Southern Hills played almost a half-stroke harder than the back side, even when factoriing in the brutal par-four 18th. The easist hole was the short par-five 13th hole, which gave up 15 of the 17 eagles seen during the week.

4. World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational: Firestone South C.C. (7,400 Yards, Par 70)
Average Score: 72.787 | Results
Average strokes over par: 2.287
Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 3
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 9, 494-yard par-4/4.447
Summary: Blistering heat and thick rough helped make Firestone South tougher than it had been in years. The classic course had only one player (winner Tiger Woods) under par for the week, and the best round was a benign 65 (5 under). There were only 11 eagles the entire week, nine of which came on the short par-5 second hole (526 yards). That hole (4.678) was the easiest of the week. Only 12 people birdied the par-4 fourth hole all week. Woods birdied that hole on Sunday en route to the win.

Average strokes over par: 2.381
Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 5
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 18, 487-yard par-4/4.611
Summary: The 18th hole at Carnoustie claimed many victims in the Open Championship, and it was easy to see why. The water-laden hole was the toughest in any of the major championships so far in 2007. More people eagled the 515-yard 14th hole (19) vs. birdieing the 18th hole (17). The 18th also gave up an incredible 44 double-bogeys. Eventual winner Padraig Harrington double-bogeyed the hole in Round 4, and Sergio Garcia (who needed a par for the outright win) bogeyed it. Harrington also bogeyed the hole in a playoff, which he won by one stroke.

Average strokes over par: 2.169
Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 3
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 14, 239-yard par-3/3.380
Summary: The hole that derailed Adam Scott (he made a triple-bogey in the final round) was one of the hardest par-3s of the year on the PGA TOUR. Surprisingly, the brutal par-4 18th hole was only the third-toughest hole -- it actually gave up 52 birdies during the week, compared to only 31 on the 14th. Despite the tough conditions, Woody Austin played the final two days without a bogey.

Average strokes over par: 2.034
Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 4
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 16, 485-yard par-4/4.411
Summary: The finish at Bay Hill is arguably the toughest closing three-hole stretch on the PGA TOUR. The 16th hole and the par-4 18th accounted for nearly half (10 of 23) of the triple bogeys recorded during the four rounds. Players didn't have a hard time hitting the fairway at 16, but only half actually hit the green in the final round. In Round 3, only 37 percent hit the green in regulation.

Average strokes over par: 1.958
Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 6
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 10, 525-yard par-4/4.322
Summary: The 10th hole at the PGA National Champion Course is the sixth-hardest hole on TOUR in 2007. The hole yielded almost half as many bogeys (143) as pars (256). Steve Stricker, who finished tied for fifth, was the only player to shoot par or better for all four rounds. The 10th hole proved crucial to Boo Weekley -- he bogeyed the 10th in the final round and ended up losing in a four-man playoff to Mark Wilson. Brett Wetterich managed to crack the top 10 with the help of a birdie on the 10th hole in the final round.

Average strokes over par: 1.543
Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 0
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 11, 489-yard par-4/4.403
Summary: The 11th hole at Congressional was the toughest hole of the week, but it didn't lead in fewest birdies allowed. That distinction went to the long par-3 second hole, which gave up only 23 birdies over the four days. There were only nine eagles all week, and five of them came on the 600-yard ninth hole, which was the third-easiest hole of the week. As expected, the back side was a tad tougher -- it played a half-stroke harder.

Phil Mickelson
Average Score: 73.397 | Results
Average strokes over par: 1.397
Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 5
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 9, 466-yard par-4/4.439
Summary: The ninth hole at the Pebble Beach Golf Links is annually among the toughest holes on the PGA TOUR. During the 2007 AT&T, it had the very distinction of allowing as many birdies (18) as double-bogeys (18). Winner Phil Mickelson didn't have much trouble at two of Pebble's signature holes -- he parred the difficult par-4 ninth and closed the tournament with a dominating birdie on the long par-5 18th. Kevin Sutherland survived a double bogey on the ninth hole in the final round to finish alone in second.

Average strokes over par: 1.280
Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 3
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 18, 478-yard par-4/4.447
Summary: The 18th hole was billed as part of the "PGA TOUR's toughest finish," and the par-4 didn't disappoint. The water bordering the left side of the well-guarded green led to a staggering 38 double bogeys, and only 39 players managed to make a 3 on the hole all week. Not surprisingly, the second-toughest hole was the water-logged par-3 17th, where the field averaged 3.368. The easiest hole was the medium par-5 15th, which gave up 168 birdies.

Average strokes over par: 1.248
Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 3
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 18, 462-yard par-4/4.409
Summary: The 18th hole was pushed back 15 yards in the renovation of the PGA TOUR's home course, and the extra yards helped the 18th retain its bite. Only 29 players birdied the 18th during the week, but the hardest hole to birdie was the 237-yard par-3 eighth, which gave up only 24 birdies. The par-4 18th hole was the only hole that winner Phil Mickelson bogeyed during his near-flawless final round.

Average strokes over par: 1.118
Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 0
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 1, 480-yard par-4/4.320
Summary: The EDS Byron Nelson Championship is contested on two golf courses, and the Cottonwood Valley Golf Club proved to be a much tougher test than the TPC Four Seasons. The par-4 first ole was the toughest hole on the course, and 10 players made double-bogey there, compared to 29 on the other 17 holes. The field averaged a full stroke higher on the front nine (35.045, 1.045 over par) than they did on the back side (36.072, 0.72 over par).

Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 7
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 11, 221-yard par-3/3.312
Summary: The 11th hole at Torrey Pines South is the hardest par-3 on the TOUR's West Coast Swing. Strangely, despite its difficulty, no one made triple-bogey or worse on the hole during the Buick Invitational in 2007. Torrey Pines South featured two of the five toughest par-threes during the 2007 West Coast Swing.

Summary: The 16th hole at Copperhead yielded twice as many double-bogeys (24) as the next-hardest hole did (12).In the final round, only 25 of 76 players hit the green in regulation. No fewer than four players made triple-bogey or worse at this grueling par 4. Not surprisingly, winner Mark Calcavecchia made a bogey on the 16th hole in his final round. Calcavecchia also made bogey at the difficult par-4 18th, but he won by a stroke when Heath Slocum bogeyed the same hole. John Senden tied Slocum for second after playing the final three holes in birdie-par-par.

Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 3
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 18, 467-yard par-4/4.625
Summary: The Blue Monster lived up to its nickname, which high winds baffling players during the World Golf Championships-CA Championship. The 18th hole, with its water and intimidating length, gave up only 13 birdies all week. Doral's brutal par-4 third hole played nearly as tough, and it gave up even fewer birdies (9) than the dreaded 18th.

Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 6
Toughest Hole/Average strokes over par: No. 6, 446-yard par-4, 4.531
Summary: The AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am has an annual rota of three courses, and two of them are traditionally ranked among the toughest on the PGA TOUR. The sixth hole at Spyglass was the toughest hole during the 2007 West Coast Swing. Incredibly, it yielded almost as many bogeys (78) as pars (85). Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 2
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 4, 460-yard par 4/4.387
Summary: Even though the long par-4 4th at TPC River Highlands played as the hardest hole of week, strangely, no one made a triple-bogey on the hole. The same couldn't be same for the next-hardest hole -- the par-4 17th -- which gave up five triple bogeys during the Travelers Championship. The third-hardest hole - the 18th -- was birdied twice on Sunday by Hunter Mahan, who wedged to two feet to win a playoff over Jay Williamson.

Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 3
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 14, 192-yard par-3/3.268
Summary: The 14th at Harbour Town isn't as well known as the course's iconic 18th hole, but it proved to be a tougher test for the world's best players. The hole gave up 32 birdies -- same as the par-4 18th -- but 22 players double-bogeyed the hole, compared to 12 at the 18th. The difficulty of the 14th and 18th holes is the main reason the back side played a full stroke tougher during the 2007 Verizon Heritage.

Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 0
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 14, 192-yard par-3/3.268
Summary: No one broke 70 for all three rounds in Reno. Winner Steve Flesch came the closest, following 63-69-69 with a final-round 72. Todd Fischer opened 69-68-69 before falling with a 76 in the final round. Montreux was not a pushover on the TOUR, but Flesch and Charlie Warren each blazed their way to nine-under par 63s during the week. Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 4
Toughest Hole/Average strokes over par: No. 12, 479-yard par-4, 4.315
Summary: It was very difficult to get the ball near the hole on the 12th green in the final round at Riviera. Because the shot required a perfect drive followed by a long or mid-iron, the average approach shot landed 51 feet from the pin (compared to 36 feet in round two). The sixth hole is a bogey machine -- 126 players made a five during the 2007 Nissan Open. Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 1
Toughest Hole/Average score: No. 7, 498-yard par-4/4.354
Summary: The Raptor course at Grayhawk ended up as one of the toughest courses on the 2007 PGA TOUR Fall Series. The par-70 course featured several par-fours of over 460 yards, including the 515-yard 18th hole. The final hole was the second-hardest hole of the week. The field racked up 1,518 birdies, but only 64 were made on the seventh and 18th holes combined. Winner Mike Weir won by getting up-and-down from a greenside bunker on the 72nd hole.

Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 2
Toughest Hole/Average strokes over par: No. 8, 490-yard par-4/4.364
Summary: Riviera Maya-Cancun features only two par 5s, and the two par 5s were the two easiest holes on the course. The course forced 18 triple bogeys or worse on the front side, but only five on the back side. The eighth hole had more double bogeys (36) than birdies (31), and winner Fred Funk made bogey on the eighth in his final round.

Summary: The second hole at Waialae is another hole that yielded as many double-bogeys (27) as birdies (27). Only 31 out of 72 players hit the green in regulation in the final round. Paul Goydos grinded out a par on the course's toughest hole in the final round -- and wound up winning by a stroke for his first win in nearly 11 years. Summary: The final three holes of the TPC Four Seasons were not pushovers, but they did give up a fair share of birdies. The par-5 16th gave up a whooping 144 birdies, making it the easiest hole on the course. The medium-length 12th hole gave up only 19 birdies all week, and almost as many players made double bogey (13). The two nines were remarkably similar in terms of scoring, with 477 birdies coming on the front side. A total of 465 birdies were recorded on the back side.

Toughest Hole/Average strokes over par: No. 4, 485-yard Par-4, 426-yard par-4/4.244
Summary: Even though Brown Deer Golf Course played in perfect conditions and is the shortest course used by the TOUR in 2007, the Par 70 more than held its own against the field. Interestingly, the easiest hole was the par-5 18th, which gave up 13 eagles during the week. Joe Ogilvie played the final three holes in three under to secure his first PGA TOUR win.

Number of holes ranked among the TOUR's Hardest 50 holes: 2
Toughest Hole/Average strokes over par: No. 5, 426-yard par-4/4.391
Summary: The front nine at Poppy Hills played two full strokes easier than the back nine, mainly because of the first and fifth holes. The fifth hole, a medium par-4, played almost half a stroke over par. The hole had 12 double-bogeys -- easily the course high -- and only 15 players birdied the holes all week. Only 25 double bogeys were scored at Poppy Hills, meaning the fifth hole gave up almost half of the dreaded doubles.

Summary: The medium-length par-4 fifth hole at Sugarloaf didn't beat up the field too badly. The hole allowed a healthy 50 birdies, well above the 34 double bogeys it managed to coax from the field. The second-easiest hole was the downhill 576-yard par-5 18th, which gave up 28 eagles during the week. Summary: In 2007, the closing holes have proved to be the most difficult on the course, and the TPC Louisiana was no exception. The two toughest holes on the course both came in the last four holes, with the 215-yard par-3 17th playing to a tough 3.234 average. The back nine played tougher than the front nine, which made winner Nick Watney's final eight holes (no bogeys) even more impressive.

Summary: Stiff fall winds helped the Jackson-area course retain some bite. Briny Baird torched the the course with a 63 on Thursday only to fall to 78 in the second round. Chad Campbell ended up scoring his fourth PGA TOUR win, but the veteran made it interesting on one of the easiest holes on the course. Campbell held a two-shot lead going into the pushover 532-yard par-five18th hole. After hitting the green in three shots, Campbell three-putted to win by one over Johnson Wagner. The 10th was the toughest hole of the week, but the par-4 11th was right behind it. Only 11 players hit the green in the third round, and only 13 birdies were made, compared to 19 at the 10th.

Summary: The short par-five 18th at Westchester is a legitimate eagle opportunity -- six players made a three during the tournament. Length was the big reason the par-four 12th played to a 4.251 average -- its 485 yards gave up only 30 birdies all week. On the easiest hole -- the short par-five ninth -- only 24 players made a 6. Summary: Vijay Singh, who finished second winner Jim Furyk, said early in the week that Angus Glen was not an overly difficult course, and he was right. The field chewed up the two par-fives on the back nine, with players averaging 4.5 strokes per hole combined on the two holes. Even the long par-4 fifth hole, which ranked as the hardest hole of the week, didn't beat players up too badly. The hole gave up only 12 double bogeys, compared to 18 on the 454-yard second hole.

Summary: The par-five 18th at TPC Boston was easily the most benign hole of the week. Of the 18 eagles recorded on the back nine, all 18 of them came on the final hole. The shorter back side played almost a stroke easier than the front side. Summary: La Quinta is a course short on length, but the long par-4 at No. 14 was an exception. The hole gave up only nine birdies and was easily the toughest hole on the course. The hole helped make the back nine significantly tougher to score on than the easier front side. Summary: The front nine of Muirfield Village was ripe for scoring -- the field averaged a full stroke better on the first nine holes. The back side, mainly because of the exceptionally difficult finish, gave up far fewer birdies (647 vs. 735) and more bogeys (546 vs. 392). K.J. Choi won mainly because of his ability to avoid bogeys on the back nine -- the Korean holed a gritty 5-footer on the final hole to save par.

Summary: Despite a daunting yardage defense against a par of 71, the TPC Deere Run wasn't that difficult. Its tree-lined, hilly location gave up a pair of 63s (Nathan Green, Brian Gay) during John Deere Classic week. Interestingly, the long par 3 12th (215 yards) didn't yield a single double-bogey all week, although one player triple-bogeyed the hole. Summary: The Tesoro Club had the unique distinction of being the only par-73 course on the PGA TOUR in 2007. The Ginn was a brand-new event, and the cut was a modest two-under. Rains drenched the course during the week, and lift, clean and place conditions were the norm during the tournament. The pivotal hole was probably the 502-yard par-five 16th hole. It was the easiest hole of the week, and winner Daniel Chopra birdied it in the final round to break a tie with Fredrik Jacobsen and Shigeki Mauryama.
